OS 40 LA
« on: November 04, 2006, 07:00:51 PM »
Just got an OS 40 LA. I'm having a terrible time getting the thing to run. I've used a number of OS engines in the past with great success, but am having a hard time with this one. On muffler pressure this engine seems to flood very easily. NV open less than two turns, just like the little pamphlet says. Dosen't matter if it is inverted or right side up.

Am using SIG 5% nitro with 25% caster oil. I think I'm following the rules, but am frustrated.

Anyone have any ideas?

Is it set up stock with the remote NVA? Thats where I would begin looking. I put a ST NVA up front on my venturi. I think other folks have had the same issue with the RNVA.

Don,

Before trying anything else turn the needle all the way in and see if any fuel passes through.  The needle could be bent or a piece of crap may be keeping it from seating fully.

Don,
I am no expert but here is my 2 cents....

Choke and flip 3 times, unchoke and flip it 3 or 4 times. Hook up glow starter and it should fire right up.

I was having problems getting a good needle on my stock 40. I replaced the backplate with a metel one, and put in a stock FP NVA. (In stock at Tower Hobbies)
If you go with the ST NVA you will have to drill out the hole.

.... for what it's worth.

Good luck

Hi Don
Ditch the remote needle and instal a standard one, you'll be suprised the difference it will make, theese are very easy to use engines.
Good luck

For a modern engine like this, 25% oil is probably too much oil. With the tight fit of the parts in todays ABC and AAC engines, they don't need as much oil, and believe it or not, just creats more friction. No room for the oil. And I like to run a 50/50 mix of synthetic/castor in my OS engines. Try SIG Champion fuel in either 5 or 10% nitro. It has 20% total oil content, and you might find it needles better. Also try running a Thunderbolt plug, aGlowDevil R/C long, or a SIG R/C long plug.
I have run rear needle valve set ups for a long time. C/L speed, racing and combat guys have been using them for years also, and they have to have as consitant setting as stunt flyers do. All the dos and don't that apply for standard needle valve installations apply top rear set ups also. The newer rear needle valves do leak a little air past the "O" ring, I think, though. I replaced the one on my LA.25 in my P-Force with the older FP rear needle valve and it works much better.
Make sure you are not over proping the engine also.
  Good luck and have fun,

I use the remote nva on my la's and the 40 i choke till my finger is wet then flip it 10-15 times then start it using no muffler pressure. same way on my 25 usually i get 1 flip starts and im using 10/25 fuel

Thank you all for the advice. There seems to be concensus here.
