Title: Making a carbon landing gear
Post by: Allan Perret on March 09, 2010, 08:06:04 PM
Seems like I saw an article about making a carbon gear recently.
Does anybody remember where it was?

CST has a tutorial on making a LG, as does Dan Winship's website, and of course, Windy has a video.  ~> Steve

And there are a ton of premade CF gears out there

Steve Wilk makes two profile LG sets. One is uni-directional, while the other has a layer of fabric. Otherwise, they're the same. See the vendor's forums...he's got one there, with lists of his products.  #^ Steve

How weird. I'm in the process of building a mold for a two piece profile landing gear. We'll see how it comes out. Looks pretty good so far.

You got that right !!  Part one of my 2 part mold is drying right now.  Will be the gear for my version of your Ringmaster Delux.  Mine will be a custom one off in that it rakes back, like the gear on a RV-4, just because I think it looks cool.   I went up in the attic this am to see what materials I could find.  Had a box with some leftover veneers from a woodworking project from 7~8 years ago.  Found a bunch of .025" thick purple hart veneer.  I plan to 1st steam them and put in the mould and dry to shape, and then glue up a lamination of 5 layers of the purple hart, alternating with 4 layers of glass cloth in between, and then after its sanded to airfoil shape probably one overall layer of thin glass cloth to let the grain of the purple hart show thru.
You got any pictures of your mould or gear yet.  I'll post some of mine when its done..

That would look cool.  I wonder if I can talk Dr. Briggs out of the steam box he used to build his wooden boat.

Hi Allan,

Your gear idea sounds great. .... I have to ask, will your gear sound like a violin or a guitar in flight?  #^

No pictures of mine yet. I have had to trash two attempts. It seems the new molding material I was trying to use eats clay. Oh joy. So it's back to the drawing board and ordering some QwikCast. I know that stuff works well. Sigh...
