Title: Magnum Kit
Post by: Gary Anderson on August 04, 2007, 09:16:30 AM
Hi guys, I bought another magnum kit, I also ended up with an extra strega wing. My thoughts is to replace the foam wing with this wing. Don't know what to call her, probably just another mess. Might turn out to be a good combo? I have fun doing dumb things like this, (if its great, leave it alone.) I guess its not in my blood to leave it alone. Use to drive my dad crazy, wish I could do that again. I'm going to add the 1/2 inch board to the bottom and probably change the stab area to match the wing. I'm going to try to match Mike's paint scheme. Power plant it going to be a Enya 60 (old style). I thinking about using a fuse landing gear, wing gear looks nicer but I'm not that great of a flier. I don't install landing gear in solid, I feel it give a break point. I would appreciate any input. Just having fun, Gary

What the hay, go for it! You never know it might work out great, but if it don't oh well stuff happens. Show some pics when you get it under construction. Good Luck

You could call her the "streg-um" (Sorry couldn't help it n~) **)

Gary, it will work.  A lot of flight characteristics will be determined by trimming. Since the Strega wing is a lot fatter airfoil (and brings more drag with it) a stronger engine than what the "stock Magnum" would use is indicated.  A "plus" to this kit bash is the extra lift the Strega wing will create giving you some leeway on building weight.  Otherwise, you should have a good plane!

Thank you Bill, I was thinking it could be a little better. I plan on using my Enya 60 on this baby. Do you think the stab area will be okay or do you think I need to size according to the Strega? I have the flaps from the strega wing but I think I'm going to rebuild them to match the magnum. I'll size the flaps to match the strega wing. I want to use Mike's color scheme, I think it really looks cool. The Magnum is a great airplane, I made a copy of Mike's magnum fuselage and using the Score's wing and stab area and really like the way it looks in the air. The Merco 61 lite case engine, Frank rebuilt for me, really sounds nice and I'm getting some great runs out of her. I hope to get some pictures of her in the air tomorrow and post them here. Thanks for your input guys, Gary

Hi Gary,  why not just use the Magnum wing and build a Strega around that wing. The Magnum doesnt need a new wing to fly good. I would just use better control hardware. The Magnum I built flew excelent, but keep it as light as possible.

Hi Gary,

I would go with a matching tail volumne to the Strega since you are using that wing.

For the use of the left over Magnum, you can build your "own deign" since you have the Magnum plans.  As Bobby Hunt often says, just change the clothes on the mannequin.  You can redraw it to match almost anything you want if you keep the basic numbers.  Shapes are just that.... "shapes". ;D

Everyone in the '60s basically did that to the Nobler! LOL!!

The fuse on the Magnum is just barely tall enough for the stock wing thickness, so what are you going to do to make the Strega wing fit? I thought you might have to make the fuse a little taller to accommodate the thicker wing? What say you??

HI Greg, I don't believe you would have to make the fuse any wider. I have build a shark 45, which the fuse seemed to small. I'll use one inch blocks on the top and the bottom. The fuse would just be cut around the wing. You have to be careful that every part lines up properly. The fuse is attached to the wing and the block does the fill in. Makes a little more work but its fun doing it. Have a great day, Gary
