Uproar finished
« on: May 07, 2006, 02:10:20 PM »
I got my R/C conversion Uproar all finished and took it out this morning and flew it. I set the engine for a rich run not knowing what to expect, new engine, R/C plane. As it turned out it was way to rich so I just went in circles but when it leaned out at the end of the tank the LAS 40 had enough power for the plane. Unfortunately my solder job on the wheel pants bracket wasn't very good. No damage on landing but didn't get another flight in. It should be fun with a good engine run, now to get a better soldering iron.

Heres a couple more. The wheel pants were my first scratch built ones and another canopy job turned out pretty good. I painted it with Lustre Kote They are discontinuing this Sky Blue so I got it from Tower at .93 a can . 2.00 paint job ain't bad.

What kind of solder do you use?
$2.00 paint job looks good.
I still think if you gave the engine about twelve degrees of offset you could hover that plane just like aa Bi-Slob. y1

What I'm using is probobly the wrong stuff (obviously) General Purpose acid core solder for non electrical applications. I got some hobby solder but my present iron doesn't get hot enough to do the job.

The hobby stuff is all you should use. Yours came in a small clear plastic canister right? the solder is about 1/16th thick and the flux is a clear liquid - right?

Could you post a picture of your soldering gun LEESTER?

Frank right on everything except the flux is in the solder. Best I could do for a pic. but you'll get it. It's a little Weller.

There should be a set screw on there somewhere that holds the soldering head to the body of the soldering gun. Sometimes the gun won't wor right if that screw isn't good and snug.

You probably already know all this.

You are very welcome for the Ks. It looks like someone else is giving you a boost too. Good!

Back to the solder thing.....................I took a picture of my soldering gun (Weller 140/100 watt) and the little container of flux and a piece of solder. Brodak sells this brand solder and it can be had at the LHS. The two brand names I know for the solder are:
 STAY-BRITE
STAY-KLEAN

they both will hold wheels and control system components forever.

Good choice. Those two screws have got to be tight.
I've been using 12 guage electric wire for replacement soldering elements. :D

Well I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but the axel shaft just will not solder to the mounting strap. I've cleaned it 3 times down to metal, cleaned with alchohol, used flux and the solder. It will take to the mounting strap but not the axel. The other one did and is stll holding. I finally said %&*!!@# and JB welded it . ??? ??? ??? ??? %^ %^ %^ %^

Now you know why the wheel pants are being left off of my Accentor.  The good solder will not bond the brass to the supplied axles.  For me it was always the inboard that came loose.  Anyway your project looks terrific.  Cant wait to see it in person.  DOC Holliday

Doc: That's wierd, I'm using Accentor landing gear and Brodak axels and it's the inboard wheel pant assy. I'll see how the JB weld holds up. I'd hate to loose the wheel pants I think they add to it's looks but if I have to I will.
