Good Morning
I have a question about the Brodak Magician.
Does this model have flaps, I really couldn't tell by the picture on the brodak website. This would be my second airplane. I'm getting back into control line flying, after 25 years. I just built a Fancy pants for my dad when he came down to visit, He hasn't flown a plane in over 55 years. We had a blast. I let him have the plane to take home with him. I want to build another one for him.
any recommendations would be appreciated. We used a brodak .25 engine.
Any plane that could take this size motor wold be great.

The Brodak kit doesn't have flaps and the B-25 would be just fine on this plane.

And don't get clever and add flaps.  The plane is too short coupled for them to add performance.  All you add is complexity and weight.  The plane is a great performer as is.  Antone Kephart has built 2 and really loves the design.   Of course now he also flies the Baby Magician from the Flying Models article.  He just finished the 2nd one of them!!!

Hey Karl, when you get through with the Magician the Brodak Tomahawk with a 25 is a blast also or the Dare Sporthawk (larger version of the Tomahawk).

I will not try to ad flaps to the Magician.
I was looking at the Tomahawk, I guess that will be the next kit.
Always like to have a project on hot standby. I will be trying to learn the stunt pattern as I go.

If Larry Renger is talking about the baby Magician of his that I flew, trust me on this, it is one of my all time favorite airplanes, and remains one of the best ships I have ever flown-and man, I have flown alot!!!

Of course you can also take any set of plans to a .35 size plane and shrink them to about 60% (aim for a 32" to 36" wingspan).  Whenever this results in an "odd" wood size, go to the next SMALLER size of sheet or spar.  Planes get relatively stronger and must be relatively lighter as you shrink them.  An example is the Baby Magician published some years ago in Flying Models.  They still have the plans available.

The plane in the article is scaled down from the Midwest kit, and modified per Jim Slihavey's original version.  It has an additional half-rib space on the outboard wing to make it more symmetrical, and half ribs that Midwest left out for economy.  I have Jim's letter and photo of his plane to prove authenticity.  If you scale the plans back up, you could have a world-beater authentic classic Magician.

Yes it is 1/2A size, I flew Antone Kephart's model on Saturday.  His is powered by a Tee Dee .049.  Dang, that is one fun airplane to fly.  I'll get a new one on the building board soon.

My original model had a variety of engines over its lifetime, the one in the photo is a PAW .049 Diesel.

Just a word to the wise, if you plan to fly 1cc at the Mackey Open meet, be prepared to do over 500 points if you want to win.  Antone and Stan are brutal!  (They cheat, they practice!)
