This may be common knowledge, but I thought I would share it anyway:
Lowes Home Centers offer Vets with proper identification a 10% discount on all purchases, except, I believe, labor. Just present the ID at check out...
It's like getting a $.05 cent per hour raise on my military pay!
-
Another source for a Lowes discount is at the post office. Ask for a change of address kit. Included are several coupons, one for 10% off at Lowes. At my post office, the had them out on the counters, but once word got out, they brought them all in and you have to ask for them now.
I bought a snowblower this winter that listed for around $700. The 10% discount was a deal maker for me. y1

Thanks Rich, news to me.
Do I need my DD-214 or will my Life Membership card for the Submarine Veterans do?
George
-
Not sure George...I use the VA as my primary medical provider and have a card with my picture...
-
I bring my DD 214, but I believe a valid ID card (reserve or active) will suffice.

No good for those of us that were not worthy, according to the guy behind the desk. H^^

x-2, wish I'd known that when I got my Lowe's card and charged a few grand to remodel my bathroom for handi-capped use. D>K

In talking with Home Depot here in north Texas they told me that as of last weekend they will only be doing the 10% discount for vets on Memorial Day, 4th. of July, Labor Day and Veterans Day. I asked if that were just for one day each. The ladies on the cash registers really did not know as it might include the whole weekend. Another thing is Golden Corral and other places offer free meals to vets on Veterans Day. Check it out. Along with the VA medical benefits this Vietnam tour is starting to pay off............

Keep an eye on your "VA benefits." The "current regime's" plans for veterans is extremely bleak and that's not conspiratorial or rumor. Stay tuned to www.military.com.

Actually, the "current regime" has done more for vets than any administration since Truman....
The fact that the teabaggers want to cut all funds is alarming

No comment...I won't even try. H^^

You guys had to make it political....
Here are some FACTS...
When I was stricken in 1998 and released from 3 weeks in the ICU, I began volunteering at two VA facilities....a retirement home in Paramus, NJ and a hospital in East Orange, NJ.
I don't do a lot....generally run the "library" cart (add my toy aeroplane and motorbike magazines) or the candy cart.......nothing heroic....I average 15-20 hours per month.
I have gotten to know several staff members at both places, and can testify that they are MUCH better funded and happier today than they were pre-2008....
If you don't believe me, go to a facility near you and do some volunteering: once you have done some, ask the "senior" staffers about funding and conditions prior to 2008.
Then check out the GI Bill...it has vastly improved in the last couple years....today a GI can actually have his education paid for by Uncle Sam.....like my father's generation. When I went on the GI Bill, the pay was $210.00 per month, for 9 months per year.
I started this thread to try to bring additional benefits to Vet's attention...not to be political...

Please let me share my story about the VA. I retired from Lockheed Martin Aircraft (F-111, F-16, F/A 22, and now the F-35) after 30 years of service. My co-pay was a mere $40 a month in 2004. Last year, 2010, it was $580 a month. Then this year it was raised again to $880 a month and for what I considered substandard insurance coverage. I had been in great health for the past 64+ years so I made the decision to drop my medical coverage until I turned 65 which will have in the end of June next month. Two days after Christmas I am diagnosed with a large tumor,(cancer) in my right kidney. It was going to be 6 more months until I would have insurance coverage again. The urologist indicated that I might not be here in 6 months. I took everything to the VA in Dallas and in mid Feb. I had surgery. They treated me like a US Senator in there. The service was second to none, they were very friendly and courteous, and the food was very good. I cannot say enough good about the VA. I am now on SS and have until Sept. to decide about Medicare part B. I can get additional supplement coverage through my retirement plane for a couple hundred a month. I may go for civilian coverage but right now the jury is still out on that. I recommend the VA medical to everyone whom is qualified. Like they say; Thank you for serving. That paid for it all.

I have no clue why it's different there Jerry? Home Depot is Home Depot. I got the 10% discount yesterday and this morning. It amounted to 13.50 this morning.

I tested Home Depot (Tony Stewart's )[/color] today. I used by VFW card.
They gave me 10 off, thanked me for my service, and told some of their own war stories. Afgan is just as tough as VN, maybe worse.

Peabody...I was not contradicting the VA hospital system, but the erosion of my military retirement benefits that were a sincere promise to me by my government. There are discussions going on today which include reducing the amount of my retirement pension, a pension, promised to our military persons who served their country for the majority of their lives; that for nearly 3/4 of a century has not been questioned until now.

I think I've said this before, but I believe we did a creditable job in 'Nam but these kids in Iraq and Afghanistan are bloody Awesome!
The only cut in my Army retirement came when my disability started to be paid to me. Then it was cut dollar for dollar. I've seen nothing in Army Echoes concerning a reduction.
The VA did offer to take care of all things for which I'm receiving disability pay, but with Medicare and with the rest being paid by Tricare, there's no reason to travel to the other side of the state for care.

I think if you'll read up on it....we[that fought/and those who died in vietnam] got cut short by politics, and then when we came home were ridiculed and called baby killers. And the final insult was when people started to discredit the whole campaign as if to say it wasn't even a war. So, from that obvious angle, your statement about these young soldiers being better in some way might become accurate some time in the near future. But like I said before, hell is hell there's no difference where you find it. And Heroes are heroes.....and good soldiers are good soldiers. And depending on the age of technology, you are what they give you and train you for. But soldier to soldier, none are better than others when they all undertake to sacrifice their lives for their God, Country, Flag, and Freedom!
