Just won a NIB Blue LA .46 on the bay for about 1/2 price. I watched the counter count down and figured someone would snipe it from me.
I never ever, ever win anything on that site and almost gave up. Just happen to stumble across it a few days ago.
Maybe I should go buy a lotto ticket? Nah. <=
I figured I need a backup engine for my Vector just in case I need it.
Something about getting a new engine. #^

Congratulations. Did you ever find a way to remove the blue? I think you were trying a while back.
-
Hey Russell,
Not me. I like the color blue.
I think there was a thread on it.
-
Russel;
Just take it apart and soak the "offending" blue case/head in laquer thinner. It will come off with a stiff brush. After doing one you'll get the hang of it. I use a bamboo scewer sharpened to fit in the hard to get places, like behind the venturi, between the fins etc., etc. And "volia" a neat looking aluminum engine! y1 y1 y1 y1

I do too. I have three blue ones - very friendly engines. Congrats of the good deal!

Leave it blue ! ... also, highly recommend replacing plastic backplate with a metal one and ditch the rear (if it's there)
needle valve for a standard front one. I have two of these "blue" .46's and they are excellent runners.
-
It is the RC version. Will be getting a Venturi from Mr. Lee. Might try a Randy Smith NVA.

Not to steal the thread but, hey Jerry. Was it you I promised the Chizler to? It was a while back and I didn't write myself a note.

p.s. Don't try and con me, Jerry. I've got spies everywhere 8) 8) 8) 8)

Randy's are the best NVA on the planet, bar none. y1
And I have taken a liking to those "BLUE ENGINES", myself. Especially in the .25 and .46 sizes.

Bill,
I think OS even made a 60 in blue?
Charles
-
Charles,
You are correct. Only problem I hear is that they are too heavy for our use. I think someone here on the boards did try one out.
I wonder if someone that had the tools could take a .60 and lighten it up for Stunt use.
-
Hi Paul,I like'em too!!!The Ebay thing has been kind of funny of late.I sell a lot on there and have been an unwilling member of the "Great Ebay Giveaway" club lately.Keep lookin' and you just might find another bargain #^ #^.I think the .60 you guys were refering too is a .65 but still too heavy.

My main complaint is that any minor mishap scratches the blue and it looks terrible. Is there a good way, maybe a magic marker, to touch up the blue?

It's easier to stop having "mishaps". LL~

Why bother when there are already user friendly 60's that you don't need to lighten?

Hi Ted!
Yes, I was me. y1 And thanks for reminding me, I totally forgot. Z@@ZZZ
Are you going to the May 5/6 contest? If so would you bring it there?

Actually I think it is a .65. OS .65LA which has been used but *might* be a touch heavy. Just maybe we worry too much about engine weight................. ;D

Did you bid on that 255.00 and change U-Reely handle?

I could not believe my eyes when I saw a LA .46 for $165.00 !!!! %^ on ebay last week.
Wonder what that guy was smoking.

Same guy had it for 300.00 a few weeks earlier. They catch guys that "don't know."
While on the topic.
I see venturis, home grown-some plastic, stuck in just about any engine and sold as CL engines. What's with that? Because they ain't inexpensive.
Also, I for one, would like to know what, if anything, is done to the inside of an an R/C engine, to make it a CL engine.
Charles

If you are going to get the NVA from Randy, why not the venturi also? Randy makes fine venturi's (Save postage too)!
You might find he has a backplate too!
Ward-O H^^

Thanks Ward. I have the BP and Venturi.
Charles,
I think you are talking about white narlin <sp?> It is like a hard type plastic. Some say you can just drill it out with the correct drill and for our use a taper bit is not really needed.
I have a few of them and they seem to work OK.

Hi Charles,
Many the R/C engines are used, straight up, by just running about a 4" pitch and letting them run in a 2 cycle. A "traditional" 4-2 break is kinda going out of style. Almost any engine will work that way (high rpm/low pitch).
Some guys can really retime the engines to where they run a break with out giving up much power, but you have to be careful as to who is doing it.

I like the Lee venturis, they're longer. Which I think reduces turbulence in the airflow. True. Maybe. Like I said, I think it helps. Lately I've been using .072 openings in the the 46 and the FP40s. Also possible to go smaller in both engines. In years past I used the big hole, .083. But the smaller opening, reduces power, better suited to the size planes I fly. Vectors, Twister, Cardinal, Tanagers and the like. Lately I've been fiddling with venturi sizes as a way to tune power appropriately to the needs of the airplane/engine combo. Dunno why it took me so many years to realize the obvious. Smaller venturi, same as closing down the throttle. The needle, in that case, is more of a mixture control, as opposed to a surrogate throttle fraught with bugaboos. In other words, the power might be right when the engine is not running in an optimum mix. Smaller venturis cut down fuel consumption as well. My contest veteran veteran Tanager/Falcon would use every drop of 6 ounces to do the pattern powered by a sloppy sloppy rich LA46. Trying to duplicate this mild/friendly setting in my recent ARF Vector left me short on fuel, couldn't get a six ounce tank in the tank space. The smaller venturi solved that, throttling back the power as well. Seems like this will be a useful tuning.
-
Hmmmm.... 6oz needed to get a pattern with a LA .46?
Knock on wood, I have yet to use that much fuel with these engines. Maybe it is the climate?
-
I typically use 4 to 4.25 oz with all my LA 46s, I have been using a .270 ish venturi. Now Pat Johnston is getting the pattern done with less than 3.5 oz, I swing the APC 12.25 x 3.75 and my last plane I flew with it was my Gee Bee profile( RIP old girl sniff sniff) It was right at 50 ounces ( after many repairs) on 570 square inches of very thick wing.
I would guess that if you are using 6 ounces, you are trying to swing something like a 5 or 6 inch pitch prop,, that will lead to running it very rich, and it also exposes the one weakness with the 46, it becomes a bit needle sensitive at that low of rpm. I typically ran mine right around 9800 prior to launch,, with the apc prop, I LOVED that combination...
-
Hey Mark,
I saw your post in another post. I am going to try one of those APC 12.25 x 3.75 on my Vector if I have the ground clearance. H^^
-
I have a few 12.25X3.75 APC props that I believe I got for the piped OS .46VF! ;D
Now they will be used on a different OS .46. ;D

Most of the weight of an OS .65 LA comes from the horrendous R/C muffler. The clunky carb. and RNVA/ bracket doesn't help either.
I'm curious what one of these actually weighs in Stunt trim- without all the guesses and gossip.
-
Here is the specs.
http://www.osengines.com/engines/la.html
OS LA .46 = 9.6 oz
OS LA .65 = 18.0 oz
I'm sure you can save a ton by dropping the muffler.
-
Tower list the muffler for the .65 at 5.5oz

I have a new blue LA .46S LA .40 blue RC/LA .25 blue RC and like the blue fine. The .25 is only one that has been run and very low time. To soak these to remove paint is outright bad idea for me.
-
I was using an LA 46 with a .283 Venturi (standard from OS), swinging a 12.25x3.75 apc on a Tanager made to look like a JD Falcon. Plane weighs 38 ounces. Tank is a 6 ounce clunk. The engine is run very rich. Lap times on 62 foot lines are near 6 seconds. Plane stays out there at that speed. Three or four laps after the clover it begins to hit lean. It runs that way in Philly. Runs that way at the Nats. Sucks every bit of fuel out of the tank in 6 and a half minutes. Definitely use less fuel with a smaller venturi. Which is partly why I switched. I am also using a standard OS needle. A supertigre or Randy needle is of a larger diameter. Further choking down the engine.
