Here I am....
The Spider as we know it is a slightly modified derivative of its predecessor, the Olympus.
There IS a plan of the Olympus, available from my stunt buddy, Henk de Jong.
He has drawn it, then had it checked and approved by Louis himself.
Actually the pinkish/orange Spider in the pictures is the second Spider built when no. 1 met it's premature end,
shedding most of its outer wing after an encounter with a rather solid soccer goal post.
Only weeks before the WCh in Helsinki, Louis took what was still useable plus a bunch of balsa and recreated the plane.
With no time left for a fancy finish, it became only coloured tissue with some silver and black trim, where no 1. was entirely silver/orange/black.
But even with the brand new ship, Louis still managed being one of Europe's best placing pilots.
About 5 years ago Louis took up Henk's offer to restore the Spider, bringing it back into a flyable state.
The story is in our Dutch forum (
http://www.modelbouwforum.nl/threads/de-spider-van-louis-van-den-hout-in-restauratie.202348/),
but as I suspect not many of you mastering this sister language to the English, ask away!
By the time the finish had to go on, it was pretty much a two man affair.
Henk's make shift spraying boot doesn't allow for ingenious contraptions that hold the model in all required angles.
So completely covered and fitted with goggles, breating mask and gloves, I played 'paint stand'.
Holding up a model of that size with stretched arms is not something I'd do every day, only for the good cause....
But it all payed off, just look at Louis' face:
Behind Louis is the entire 1994 (Shanghai) Dutch team, Henk on the right, Erik Janssen (who built two Veco .45 from a shoe box full of parts,
leaf through the Dutch story and you'll find his report under his forum name 'F2B') in the middle and me on the left.
As for the wing, the tip plates on the Spider are more or less the Olympus' ones, but reversed.
The fuse sort of morphed, from the Olympus Mk1. (the plan), through the twin fin Olympus (I first saw when I was still flying my .09 beginner model), into the Spider.
The full size Olympus plan can be ordered from Henk de Jong, just contact me for his e mail address.
I am sure Henk will fill you in on the details that make it a Spider. He had it on the bench for long enough....
