Title: Lord of the Flies....
Post by: Scott Richlen on July 26, 2019, 01:29:16 PM
It's summertime, so at our field we end up going through the various cycles of critters hatching.  The latest is the "ankle-biters".  These are nasty little flies that bite you right through your socks!  And if they get after you while you are doing the pattern, oh boy!  Nothing like having one land on your hand for lunch just as you start the downward leg of your outside square.  No fun at all!

Remember the Boy Scouts "Be Prepared"?  I carry some sticky traps in my van just so I can give these critters the "welcome" they so richly deserve!

I set this one out today and with a little luck it will collapse the local population by the time of our big flying session tomorrow.  This is after just a half-hours exposure!

My practice field has gone through several biblical style plagues this season: floods, frogs and mosquitoes.

We were flying today and no pesky ankle-biters.  One sticky-pad collapsed their population.  Ain't technology wonderful?

After work this past Friday afternoon I went out to our flying field to have a fun flying session with three of my best buds. While trying to help one friend I had the most unpleasant stinging sensation on my lower legs( I was wearing shorts with low socks in my shoes) when I looked I saw a squadron of knowing flies having dinner on my flesh! Back to my van for a squirt of many year old "Off Spray"! That ended the fly Banquet!

Not sure just what there is about them, but I'd rather have a bee sting than a fly bite anytime.  Can't imagine being pestered during a flight!

I don't know why all old men have to wear shorts in the summer. All it does is accent your gut and not so youthful legs and provide a smorgasbord for flies and ticks. You are actually cooler in jeans than shorts, but that is my opinion and it works for me. No bites and no sweating either.

Yes wearing long trousers/jeans is cooler then shorts and saves you from the bugs and skin cancer. Lots of older flyers here in New Zealand have skin cancer on legs, faces and arms (we have higher UV radiation being nearer the pole with less ozone protection) Farm workers , construction workers and C/L flyers often don't think twice and get badly burnt or bitten when a bit of planning with long sleeves, pants and hat together with those lotions we smear on do make the activity more pleasant. Bit like not covering up properly when welding and living in agony the next day  ~^

As long as they're wearing clothes and their dangly bits are concealed, it's ok with me!   LL~ Steve
