Flying day..........or it was.....
« on: April 01, 2019, 08:46:38 PM »
Weather today was perfect. Day off too. Got my husbandly chores done and loaded up to fly.  Got there, and my field was occupied by several people also enjoying the day. Couldn't fly.

Left and returned an hour later.

Field was empty!  Began unloading things and then realized another flaw.  My Cosmic Wind and my Ringmaster share a fuel tank attached to an interchangeable mount. It was discovered that this tank had been left at home.  Crap!!  At this point it was getting late in the day and the sun was getting lower on the horizon which makes it irritating, because on each turn it's right in your eyes.

Well, perhaps Wednesday. Taking the day to go to the hot springs tomorrow.

I feel your pain! Some time last summer I got all pieces/parts set up. Fuel syringe loaded, tank full, stooge set and locked down with the cinder block, rolled out the release line, rolled out my control lines, started the engine for a ground run to warm up, and searched for the handle. And searched for the handle again.

Shoot!

Left the plane on the stooge, ran home and got the handle back to the plane before the sun came up too high and in my eyes. Got in two quick flights. Fortunately my circle is only a five minute drive from home. But this wasn't the first time I left something home!

Since then I use a checklist to ensure I load up before flying, and pack up after flying.

The first time I did the thick-skull pack-up, I lost/left a brand new RSM Renger 1/2A handle in natural wood/Poly-U on the pavement. I love those handles, I hated the loss! The following replacement handle is Safety Orange...I won't miss that in any light!

Columbus, MS!

I think I've flown at least once each month since last summer. Nice, new, concrete  church lot with 125' between four light poles, far enough apart for 50' lines easy. Makes for good night time flying too!

Well, that's poopy.....lol.
Perhaps it will be minimal enough to get a flight in.

Motors,

Sure there is! Here's a list of the least windy cities in the US of A. People will probably argue about the data, but you can go check it out yourself:

     http://www.city-data.com/top2/c468.html

Now, having read the places at the top of the list, I ask you, was this why every control line guy from SoCal that ever retired moved to Three-son Azurona? (Of course, if it is too hot to go outside for several months of the year without getting fried, that might also be a consideration, no?)

Here in Lost Angles, we get the Santa Ana winds, where it blows backwards and the humidity gets stupid low. We had a bit of that last week. On Sunday, the wind started to die down just about the time everybody had rolled up their lines to go home and build something. Was pretty close to perfect:  stopped blowing backwards, stopped shifting around, wasn't blowing into the sun anymore, wasn't blowing so hard that a tired Fox couldn't pull a sport plane over the top. Righteously good!

Oh, and be sure to pick a place that actually has a control line circle or three.

Technically, you have room for 60’ lines with a couple feet for the wingspan to spare. Keep your arm pulled in close, you’ll be fine.

Is there a place I can move to where the wind isn't blowing 15 mph all day every day.
No - that is in the official rules somewhere.

This brought back memory of where KCK put the control line circle until they took it back and put in soccer field with lights.  It was in a hole that used to be a street car turn around(how many remember those)?   Was trying to get some patterns in, but every time I got up above 50 degrees the plane would go hay wire.  Seems the wind was really blowing,   Was disgusted and loaded up and went home.  As I was cleaning the plane it dawned on me the lines and handle were still at the circle.   Drove back even though after dark it is dangerous and there the lines/handle were waiting for me.  Now I double check the circle and the shop. We all have a routine that keeps us flying. y1  After a while we get over confidant and think it is OK to skip the routine. n1  Then we get a first hand lesson in why rebuilding takes longer than building.

My big thing to leave at the field is the glow plug stick. mw~  Going electric has made that better. #^
