Look at what i found in the attic ! Time capsule
« on: May 22, 2018, 08:22:51 PM »
Hello
Clearing out my parents attic of all my old combat stuff and it is sort of a history of combat models from the 70's till about 2000. Most are my models but some are my brother Karl's and others were built by some famous flyers here (Bryce Gibson and Marcel LaGrand). Some glow, some diesel from 049 to 19-35 size with lots of different styles of construction and covering.
Figured I can re-purpose some into aerobatic training duties for my sons and save some rebuilding time on there stunt models.
'
Do you know a K&B 3.5 has the same bolt pattern as a Fox 35 so will swap some of those on for half the power at half the revs and a nice slow 'stunt' run.  ;)

Regards Gerald  ;D #^ :)!

Hi Matt It's a pity I hardly get to run the Chevy C10 (10MPG ) as fuel is so expensive here, soon to hit $3 a litre with the new taxes to arrive in June (about $8 US a gallon)
They want us to dispose of our petrol/diesel cars  n1 n1 n1 n1  and get a 'subsidized' electric car but I like my Holden Commodore wagon.... :(

At least I can make up glow fuel without crippling government fuel tax (yet) other then the GST.   #^ #^

How'd you get that truck down from the attic?

achieve maximum nuisance value.

All over the planes like a dirty shirt.

I know what I'm talking about.

Hello His brother is better behaved and walked over the models. (see top left of pic)
The ginger (Jester) often follows us out and sits in the circle when you are flying, he steps over the lines as well!
5 cats here and I enjoy their company when everyone is at work or school and I'm working outside but they can get terribly 'underfoot'.  ;)

You hit the jackpot, Gerald!

Think any of the air frames are salvageable? Coverings going to need to be replaced/etc?  Surely the engines are good once de-gummed and freed up/cleaned up.

What a fleet!

Hello Andre Some models will go on to serve as stunt trainers with my boys with a bit of work. Others are ready or have now gone to the bin/bonfire after removing hardware.
Luckily I oiled, then covered the engines with plastic wrap and after 20+ years they were still free turning  :) I was expecting the worst but the attic was dry and dusty not humid and they survived well .
I honestly did not think I would use those combat models again till my sons (aged 9 and nearly 11) wanted to learn the Sportsman/ novice pattern and I could not fix their conventional stunt models quick enough.
Regards Gerald

Can you change the C10 over to run on propane? Best with a high compression engine, but $ is the deciding factor. A loosely rolled up newspaper will train a cat pretty well. Well, "train" might not be the correct word, but it will make an impression. Whether temporary or permanent depends on the cat.  :-\  Steve

Hey Steve..

A rolled up newspaper or a squirt of water
is just a suggestion that eating the house plants
or sharpening claws on the furniture might be more fun.

Gerald is correct though. They are good company
when I'm working on the planes but I have developed
a bad habit of explaining every step to them as I build.
My neighbors think I'm nuts.
They might be right.  - K.

The cat that used to help me when I was in the basement of the house is long gone.  I figure at 17+ it was time as my daughter took her home for the last few years.  Now I have my Sandy  who helps me find stuff and calms me down when I start not having fun.    This is the trio from left to right,   Prissie,  Teddy and Sandy.  They are in the shop with me most of the time. Hello
It's nice to have company in the shop or on the field with our fury friends

Steve the C10 was on CNG /Propane in the past but here in New Zealand they have priced it and diesel with additional road charges/taxes here in such a way that you cannot win unless you drive an electric vehicle now .

Got some of the combat models out for some test flights today with my wife Alina ( and Cat Jester) but the field is very wet after a week of rain and turns to mud real fast.
Its nearly the middle of winter here and not the best weather for flying and we can't cut the grass short till October or November when the ground starts to dry out.
Found my old plastic tanks were often set up wrong with vents to close to fuel pick ups .

They had to do Two Years ( ministry of Transport ) on a motorcycle before a @#$% box . Most hated them as they were clumsy inept riders , and broke them . were also issued with ww1/ boer war D.R. putte boots .

Some were misguided enough to think a mid 70s Jap sh*t actually handled well .  LL~ LL~( a 1950n Rover would outcorner common garden

Ps: I think I'm in trouble...almost understood that last one. Electric vehicles, propane, 70's Jap bikes and city slickers bad / gas and Ducati good? I need my Cracker Jacks decoder ring...

Hi Matt
You probably made the right move to Aussi before things got so far out balance .
I am still happy to stay here as long as I can still fly in the back yard but not many flying buddies left here now.
Most people these days have no time for hobbies let alone C/L flying and are too busy just earning enough.
On a positive note we have not been invaded by 'city slickers' here due to a council policy to stop development on the Kaipara coast.
Hope you will not be stifled by regulations like our 'nanny state' .
Regards Gerald
