Les McDonald has long chided me to write the story of what happened to the US F2B team in Poland in 1980. I have been writing a book entitled The Genesis Saga for several years, but it is doubtful that I'll be able to complete it as I had wanted to due to some health issues. So, just in case I don't get to present that book to the Stunt community, I have decided to at least tell the "Poland Story" about which so many have wondered.
In the Library section of this forum I have just posted that story. It's long, and, well, it's weird, but it's also completely true (at least from my perspective; the other team members may remember parts of it differently...).
So, if you are in the mood for a Stunt story from the past, check it out.

No matter how many times I have heard this story (now officially read it), I still crack up. I can just see Knopi buzzing down the road then surfing into the ditch!
Lucky they gave you your camera back. (my wife would end that sentence with dummy! - well, not really, but I can't write what she would say here but dumb would be part of it)

It is really sad when minor stuff like politics gets in the way of the important stuff like a good stunt contest. Where are these peoples priorities anyway?
Great story - you should write finish a book.

Wow...
That time we lived behind the "Iron Curtain", in Hungary.
Thanks to our revolution in 1956, our virtual system of living looked not so rigid just like in DDR, or anywhere else within the "Warsaw Pact". Hungary was called as "merriest barraque of Communist Camp" :)
Some hated us (DDR and Rumania) some liked us (Poland) and many polish citizens used to come to us regularly, to make their minor businesses. The "Polish Market" was its common name.
Returning to your story, if you picked up connection with Piotr Zawada* previously, all your needs for practice place & everything in Poland, could been arranged perfectly.
*late Piotr was an excellent man, friend, stunt pilot, and finally world champion in C/L scale. (F4B). Naturally he spoken English fluently, and had written a nice book on "Secrets of C/L Stunt".

Since I'd known "Tommy Team Race" (Knoppi) since I was in high school (he worked at my local hobby shop), I'd heard some of the story, but not really the stunt team side...except for Bill's over-indulgence and puking. Tom passed three years ago, and I think of him often. The stunt side of the story was a great read, so thank you for sharing! y1 Steve

I have added my perspective of that trip in the Library. I was the Assistant Team Manager, so I saw a lot of different aspects that someone on one of eh teams would not have seen. Apologies for a long article, but I've been meaning to write tit for ever.
