Title: Local Contest might be history.
Post by: Paul Taylor on August 11, 2012, 02:29:45 PM
We had our club meeting today and it sounds like this might be the last year for the Memphis Stunt Classic. :'(

Not sure who will attend, but last year was a light turn out and our CD is not sure we will have any better attendance this year. Our club is basically an RC club that allows 4 CL club members take over the field for the weekend every year to host the contest. I sure hope some of the folks that have come in the past will join us again.

I know that people tend to go to the same contest every year, and it is difficult to make every contest in the
tri-state area. Heck I can barely get a kitchen pass to go to the few contest that I get to attend. mw~

If you are not doing anything on Sept 8-9 we would love to see you there!

Not sure if this well help, but there is a big local town fair that is going on the same weekend as our contest. And the RC club will have a booth at the fair. Anyone that wants to go over and fly a demo flight (or practice) at the end of each day will get a free parking pass and access into the fair.

The fair is not an attraction for me, but I was already thinking about making the MSC this year.
Hope its not the last one..
Might even bring another flyer (or 2) with me...

Wit the economic times like they are, I am sure almost everyone running a contest will see a fall off.  Hopefully you guys can weather the storm and the meet will continue.  I would like to come but cannot make the trip this year.

Good Luck!

Like Bill said, all the local contests are down, due to the ecomedy (sic). It might not be so bad to drop it for a year and wait for the economy to pick up, but let folks know that you'll be back.

The gas bill isn't always the bad part...motels are expensive, and state hotel taxes make it worse. Opening up a spare bedroom for a contestant or two can help. I stayed at Varley's last weekend, and couldn't have gone without the free flop. Keith was invited to stay here next weekend, but he's coming down on Sunday only, so now Tim Wescott has the spare room. I hope he doesn't have nightmares from the pink stripes!  LL~ Steve

I would try to keep it going at all cost, just so you can keep the dedicated date and people will get used to it and attend when things allow. For me, it's several things that have been keeping me from hitting the contest circuit like I would like to, including the economy, family and work issues. But I have hopes of things getting better each year and getting out and around more, including Memphis. I'll be at Paducah next weekend, but there is always a chance that something will get in the way and cause me to cancel. We have had discussions in our club about declining attendance and being prepared to adjust to it. Keeping awards simple and inexpensive is one way to save money and a yearly review of events and related attendance of each. Times change, and you have to be prepared to change with them. Good luck with the event!

It a stunt only contest. Would it help draw people if we had other events?
Combat, racing, carrier, scale?

Probably not, unless you happen to know a bunch of guys that fly those events that would show up. Stunt is usually the biggest draw.

I finally made it to more than just one contest this year.   Tulsa and Wichita.   Both very poorly attended.  I think it has  more to do with too  many classes of stunt.  This part of the good ole USA does not have that  many stunt flyers or for any other event.   Yes the economy had a lot to do with my attendance as well as some physical problems.   I have finally said no matter how much it hurts I will fly.  But, with the low attendance I did get some awards at both contests.  But, yesterday on the way home I am thinking, the awards is not where it is at, but the people that I have met thru the years and comaradery.
