Everyone,
Just a general question about the L&J modified Fox 35 stunts and if Larry made some with the Blue Magic head. Most I have seen used something similar to Randy Smith's hemi head. Saw a picture of an engine, thought it was a SilverFoxx but later saw the L&J and number on the bottom. Perhaps it was a modified version.
Thank you in advance for any feedback.

Mine has a silver head.
I'll bet you could special order what you wanted.

I am not sure whether that is something Larry supplied, or someone else added it later. The Blue Magic head was a common tuning part in the 90's, RSM sold them. Someone told me they slightly extended the 4-stroke, a few hundred RPM, for the cases where you wanted it to break later in the corner.

Now I have to ask the question, got any idea how many after market heads were available?? The Marvin Denny/Fox Hemi head had the button head with the plug in the center. I think all the others I remember had angled plugs with flat surfaces?? I would have to go through my stuff and see what I have but I think I have at least one blue head. Anything specific that sets the Blue Magic head apart from the others in appearance beside the blue color??
Type at you later,

Everyone,
Thank you for the responses so far. Ty's purple head is not one I have see before. My current SilverFoxx 35 has a purplish head, but it started as blue and has shifted color a bit over time. As for heads on the Fox 35 I know of the standard high compression head that Fox made (have not seen one in years though- Bill Morbacher confirmed that they did exist when I asked hima couple years ago), the Blue Magic where the top of the plug points rearward, Randy Smith's head where the top of the plug points in the direction of the exhaust (not sure if this is the same as what Larry Foster used on his, but they look a lot alike), the Fox/Denny button style head that pointed straight up and one I found a few years ago that looks like a Smith head that was not completely finished.

Tom Muggleton used to install an aftermarket head on Fox Stunts along with some other engine modifications. The head had a rear-angled plug, and sported nice machine work. The one I worked on was anodized a greenish/bronze color. Not sure if it had faded or not. But they had a good reputation here in SoCal.

I have one with the blue head purchased from Larry at a VSC many years ago. Never got around to using it. I had another that I did use, but don't remember what color the head was.

Various styles.

Are these heads for sale? If so where did we order and how much?
Would like to try a blue head if it's available.
Thanks

Just part of my stash. Not sure if they're still available somewhere.

Sorry a little off subject- I have one of the 1963 GOLD 15th Anniversary Fox 35 that is like new except the previous owner replaced the original gold plated head with something else-either stock or???. I'd like to find an original gold head for my engine. Does anyone have one I can buy ? Thanks!

Hi John, I have owned and used several Magic Blue Heads and have found them to superior to any others I've had and used! They were made by Tom Muggleston who is a fine machinist. He's also the one who made "Happy Camper" engines, which were Tower .40's modified with ball bearings and perhaps other things. In addition to the Magic Blue Head I added Super Tigre NVA, NO mods to the Block id, and a
stuffer Back Plate by Fox. My prop of choice for these engines was and still is the MAS 9 1/2 X 6 as manufactured by the company and NOT a cut down 10 X 6. You may recall my old El Diablo as flown with you many years ago! That plane was powered by such a Fox .35 with all the goodies mentioned.

PS Tom Muggleston is no longer making Magic Blue Heads Heads unless he return to production recently. TTBOMK!

How does one visually identify a “Happy Camper” Tower .40?

I posted these pics of my L&J Fox 35 on FB. Every time I post something there it turns up here like no one has ever seen it before, Lol!

Could you expand on that, what did they do to make the engine better?
Thanks,

That was a good score that day you bought it.

Don't know about Fox, but often just better flatness, roundness and fit can make miracles. Ideally each head should be fitted individually. I use a 5 micron clearance between cylinder and the part of head that goes into cylinder. L

Happy Camper Tower 40's have ball bearings in both front and rear support spots. Pull off the thrust washer and you will see the ball race there. As I recall mine had caged or schiedled ball race in the front, right behind the skinny washer which is just behind the prop drive washer.

Different, not necessarily better. The claimed benefit of the Stage III and Blue Magic (by people who knew what they were attempting to do and qualified to evaluate the results) was to hold the 4-stroke to slightly higher revs without also increasing the break.
Like all of the aftermarket Fox heads that I know about, the overall compression is also increased.
