Life getting in the way!
« on: February 02, 2007, 12:48:18 PM »
Hi All,

Just asking............. how do y'all handle it when "life" with it's responsibilities, health issues (for us older pharts) and all, seems to "get in the way"??

Had a hard time for the past year, or so, trying to get things "done" when it comes to this hobby....... health issues with my wife, and me, job issues, etc., etc, just "get in the way" of really important things like building, flying..........**)

I have found that the solid friendships that I have developed in this hobby were a source of strength when life got in the way.

Bill,

Life is what happens while we are busy making other plans.

I don't know where or when I first heard that one, but it has proven itself true time and time again. I go along with Chuck and Dean: your friendships and lasting relationships are what carry you through.

Please do not hesitate to call someone if you need help. We have all been in the same situation at one time or another.

Take care,

Someone told me that if you just take 30 minutes each day and do a little something on your project that you will get it done. Sometimes quicker than if you took big chunks of time to try and get it done here and there.

Takes planning Billy-Boy.  LL~

Seriously, I try to plan out my building sessions. When I have other projects and Honey-dos, I try to plan those so that I am still left shop time.

Flying is another issue. First I have to someplace TO fly. I'm working on that.

Hey Bill

Keep your chin up mate.. don't let it get you down.   I have two early teenage kids going to school and let me tell you their demands are high these days.  What I do is every night after dinner (when everyone else is watching tv, doing homework or whatever) I go out to the shed and build/tinker/play until I've done what I wanted to do today. Sometimes till midnight or 1am. During the next day while I'm doing all the daily "life" stuff, I think about what I'm going to do the next evening.

This works for me.

There allways seems to be alot of bumps in the road of life we all follow and sometimes those bumps seem like mountains but as said before good friends close and far away and this hobby of ours can smooth out the roughest of times. I have just started building my first modern stunt ship and I to wish there was more time for it and there will be. One thing is for sure a good flying session down at the field which does not happen nearly often enough still relieves some of lifes presures in all of us. You have taken the first step by venting a little this is good we all need to share our grief from time to time.Chin Up It Will Get Better. Walter ;)

Boy Bill,

Do myself and Janet ever know exactly what you mean.  It seems the older we get the more of life's bumps in the road come our way.  Wife Janet is batteling a case of bladder disorder right now.  I have to take here to the doctor once a week for six weeks for an internal bladder treatment.  I know that's something she and I both don't look forward to.  Another thing that gets in the way these days is trying to read and do posting on forums.  That just seems to take an inordinate amount of time each day.

Whew,   Life just keeps getting everywhere we don't want it!

I must be lucky. I am coming off my third pacemaker installation. I have spent the last 3 weeks catching up on my repair work. I now have 12 flyable airplanes. Some look a little strange, like the Galaxy with a 3D arf tail section. I don't care as long as they fly.

Since the majority of us are probably well past middle age Most have developed some kind of a philosophy to live by. The philosophy that I try to live by was established many years ago after I read a little story that I will share with all of you.

It seems that there was once a king who called all his wise men and advisers together. He told them to get together and come up with something that would keep his life balanced. When they all met with the king again they presented him with a ring. On the ring was inscribed four words :"This to will pass" . He ask them to explain what it meant. The explained that when life was good just remember that it will pass so be thankful for that day when things are bad remember that some day they will surely pass so take comfort in that.

I try to live by that although I can never do it perfectly. I relish each good day and absorb the goodness of that day. On the days that are not good I remember the good days and fully expect that there will be more days that are as good as any in the past.

Just remember that there are lots of people like me ,who you have never met personally, that care and are trusting and believing that things will get better for you. I am sure that I speak for all who responded and many , many more who didn't when I say  WE CARE

all of the above!

while on kemo last year i couldnt work/race ect but thought i could fix up a few old c/l planes
my mind would work with skips and misses but the body would barely function.
wound up building a new stunter and a couple of ama fast combats--good therapy!

hope weather will let me fly before long.

if we survive life we will certianly die from it.
when its time for me to die im the only one who has to die--
in the mean while im gona do my thing.

hang in there Bill--it will get better

For me life ("don't ask ME about life" - for all you Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy fans out there) gets in the way all the time.

I'm pretty fed up most of the time having gone from earning @£50000 to @£10000 a year.

Also my wife is disabled and suffers from a series of interelated chronic illnesses.

Still we struggle on.

My health ain't too bad - I've got a cold at the moment and am borderline blood pressure, diabetes & Cholesterol.

I squeeze building and flying in when I can (but not unfortunately enough of either)!

I hear you guys.  I've been working on a 1/2a scratch build for nearly a year now.  I may have six or seven hours actual build time in it.  Its a little past half done.  Maybe it'll fly this summer.  Just when I thought I may be able to pour a little more money into the hobby I found out that my 15 year old's orthodontic work is gonna cost about three thousand $ more than the insurance is going to pay.  On another note,  I don't have an actual shop.  The storage area I use tends to get filled with all kinds of stuff.  Sometimes I have time to build but just don't fill up to moving all the bicycles, gas cans and other stuff out of the way.  One thing that helps me is keeping the perspective that my hobby is just that, a hobby.  I enjoy it when I can.  I use it to relieve stress.  I try not to get so wrapped up in it that it becomes a point of stress.  Somehow just knowing that it is an optional activity adds to the fun.

I must add that I owe a lot to people who do take this hobby very seriously.  Developing products, passing on information...   I am very thankful for this forum and a few others and I thank people like Robert and his moderators who make it happen.  Thank you to you hard working people who add some enjoyment to my life.

Thanks guys.  I know a lot of people out there who are much worse off than me, but still it's good to realize that, "I ain't the only one out there".  I have let the "hobby" build into much too much stress at times, and all the other things seem to really mount up then.

Thanks, again.

I have had problem and some serious health issues despite the fact that the last 25 years I have tried to take care of myself and there comes a time in everyones life where it doesn' mater what you do you will realize we are not young. anymore. I quit smoking when I was 52 years old. and started to exersize a lot and took up bycycle riding. My job was runing a large cutter in a print shop which required a lot of lifting. In 200 I had a small stroke in June. In july I had a caterac removed. I had one removed in my other eye in the 70's and because of methods in those days it did not work so I am blind in one eye. thank God the stunt patern is 2 demensional. In 19 70 I kept getting a tightness in my chest so went to the doctor a found I had heart desease and on top of that emphazima I had triple bypass sugery shotly after.
I had a lot of bills to pay so I worked another year and then retired. Other than home duties I can pretty much work in my shop when I please. I still don't spend much time there and I build in a more relaxed mode than I used to. I can usually fram an aiplane pretty fast but painting takes me longer and now I can leave the plane set between coats. anyway the best way to treat life is to roll with the punches and enjoy it as much as possible and I have found that over the years friends ar perhaps the most important part of a person being. live life to the most every day.

My father in lae always used to say I am just waiting to die off. I ised to tell him there is more to life than you think . One day he died off. I worked with a man that used to back from lunch and he always said " one of these days they are going to be patting me in the face with a shovel". and one day they were. The morel to the story is , done wiat around for the other guy to get a shovel. There is still a lot of life left in all of us. why not use it.

There always seems to be life issues no matter what stage of life we are in. I have been away from the hobby for the last 9 years, house re-habbing, children, grandchildren, work, sickness, death all have contributed to my hiatus from the sport. I even had to sell all my models, engines, balsa, equipment and airplanes to pay some bills off. I still buy magazines, look at the PAMPA website and have just found this blog, control line is never far from my mind but there are other obligations that are at the top of the list. But someday I hope to get back into the hobby and hope to build my own private field on our place in southern Missouri. Here is my website that contains pictures of what I have been up to in the last few years: http://arcadiaacres.com/  To all of my friends that I have made over the years; hello again, it is good to see that there is still a lot of interest in the sport.

Well guys and gals, I was informed yesterday by my neurosurgeon that they will not operate on my back again unless something goes terribly wrong where the pain medication will not let me keep walking, etc. Luckily my daughter graduates from UCLB in the spring and is well on her way toward her goals and my son knows where he is going with his life. Teena and I are still planning on retiring in 1 1/2 > 2 years and moving to OK or NE TX. We still want enough property to put in CL circles, an RC runway, shooting facilities and a good size shop. We also want to travel this great country and see all the wonderful places, attend CL contests and the get to-gethers involving Teena's hobbies. We hope anybody traveling by, when we are home, or maybe not home, will stop by and use the flying fields or just stop and camp, etc. on your journeys. So if my round loops aren't perfectly round and my square loops aren't perfectly square, I'll keep turning in circles as long as I can or they pull that old E-Z Just handle from my cold dead hand.

Control line stunt is a just an excuse to meet the best people around.  Stunt flyers stay in this hobby for so long or seem to return with incredible consistancy because they find out what we all know; and that is, as a group, stunt flyers simply cannot be beat!!!

I am getting older and just recently, my doctor informed me of a significant health issue, but, as a result of my association with this hobby, I have taken very good care of myself,(could be the reason why things didn't manifest sooner) and I look forward to achieving some very serious goals in competition stunt,(you don't do Autocad and Solidworks just to fly P40).

Bill, when you get to the end of your rope....tie a knot in it and hang on.

Think of this old proverb:  I cried because I had not shoes until I saw a man who had no feet!

I will pray for you and all of the people who responded to your first blurb who told of "life getting in the way."  We all have our problems. And friends sure do ease the pain and suffering that result.  So does a hobby like control line building and flying.

Mike, the pictures sure make me homesick.  I graduated from Humansville High in 1960.  Did not have that many years in Missouri, but, it sure felt like I had been born and raised there.  Anyway there is really one reason we are on this piece of raock floating thru space and time.  Just hope that I am worthy to meet him one day.  DOC Holliday

Hello John, if you are ever back in Missouri you are more than welcome to come and hang out for a while. That is one of the reasons that I got the place so that friends and family can come out and enjoy the country. I am building to ultimate model! My first attempt at building a house. Instead of 16th of inches I am using 16 inch centers! My model building has really paid off in the construction of this house, I pay more attention to detail, I can see things conceptually like I did when designing a new stunter, I have actually constructed formers to create curved surfaces, for instance the stairwell ceiling to the second floor in the old house. I plant on building another stunter someday, I need to clear a 200x200 foot area for a circle too!
