Let's see your new planes
« on: May 06, 2008, 02:55:40 PM »
Here I thought I would get a photo of my planes before I start flying(crashing) for the season. while they still look good. The first photo is the ones I built this winter and have not flown yet. A Brodak P51, Brodak Super Clown ad a Challenger designed by a friend of mine. The P51 is 42oz, the Clown is 32oz and the Challenger is 26oz. The second is of the flyable Fleet. With the new planes are a Banshee with a LA 40, a TF Nobler with a Fox 40 and a TF Tudor with a Fox 50. The Banshee has the most flight time on it and rebuilt a couple times. I have yet to get the Tudor trimed yet. And the Nobler has too big a motor in it. Oh well I think I heard someone say you can never have too much power.

How 'bout this one?

I couldn't begin to post pics of my entire "flyable fleet".  I collect airplanes like screens collect flies. there are no doubt many that will never fly again just because I don't have time to get around to them all.  A little frustrating when I want to build a new one and have to think about where I'm gonna put it. Not mention justify it to wifey.

I just got a second color on it about an hour ago. I'll pull tape tomorrow. When I get the rest on, I'll post a picture.

Mike,

What is the wing covering on the Super Clown?  Refreshingly different looking.  It reminds me of when we used women's silk scarves to cover combat planes when I was a kid.

Thanks,

Kim it's from a silk skirt my wife gave me. I have enough for at least 2 more planes. So plan on seeing more of it from me. Yea there use to be a family here in St Peter that flew allot of C/L back in the 50s and 60s and almost all their planes were covered with silk scarves and clear dope. So when I think about old planes they don't look right without flowers or paisley.  n~

Here is my 680 square inch, 60" span home design, modelled off Brian Eather's Starduster from the early '80s. (Pre Firecracker.)
Powered by an ST60.
Flies well and has a take-apart wing to fit in my car.

Hi guys,

I painted the silver base coat and before I finished her, wanted to be sure she would fly. I guess I have to finish her, flew great. This plane has a nobler arf wing, an ares fuse and tail section is just something I dreamed up. Using a Merco 40 with a three blade prop. Made a 5 1/2 ounce tank for her. Complete she weighs out at 45 ounces. I made about fourteen different canopies for her, still don't care much for this one. I plan on painting the fuse with Candy Apple Red, using the silver base color as pin strip lines to break up the other colors. Of coarse there will be black on the fuse, also orange and maybe some white. This plane is for my brother, so he's not going to let me get away with just using one color. Randy has being giving me some great advice and I hope she turns out to be a nice looking toy. Really don't care about points just want a nice looking toy. Have a great day and keep them in the air, Gary.

My newest plane is not really new. It is a Brodak Cardinal that I had hanging on the wall and with the help of Randy Taube in CA, I converted it into an electric profile. It is ready to fly with timer and speed controller all programmed and batteries charged. Looking for first flight next week.

Well, it's not quite ready. It's now sanded out and buffed up and the hinges are drying in the main airframe. Control surfaces on tomorrow and final assembly along with wrapping the leadouts. But here it is, more or less. The new classic ride.

Guess I should show that it's done. Here's another picture, ready except for wrapping the leadouts.

As stated it was supposed to be simple.  Now why is race number on wrong wing tip or has rules been changed?  Looks gorgeous Randy.  Can I send my next one to you for paint scheme.  I think to meet rules all I have to do is build, put on primer coats and final clear.  DOC Holliday

What? This is simple. I could post of picture of my plane "Dangerous". Now that was a tough paint scheme. This was pretty easy. I only have maybe 6 hours total in taping instead of 8 hours for each color.   ;D

As usual, it looks better in the pictures than live. I went really light on the base color and on the clear. Unfortunately, I have rubbed through in a couple of areas. Not too noticable and mostly on the bottom, but it will be serviceable, I think.

Someday, I'm going to take the time and do a real "20 pointer". But it will probably be a toad.

Doc,

Reno planes go fast and turn left with the right wingtip high in the air. Some put in on the left wing low, others on the right wing high, but the orientation is the same.

Hi Mike,

"Otto the Junior Gyro", a 1/2A scaled version of the original "Otto the Gyro". Knowing nothing about autogyros, I had to kinda guess at balance point, rotor swept area, etc.  Not yet flown, have no idea if it even will.  Promise you, when I know we'll all know!
