Title: lesson on tollerance
Post by: RC Storick on November 20, 2015, 09:27:50 AM
For year now some have directed Skepticism but I knew with perseverance the light would finally come on. How did I know this because it happened to me. Same scenario different venue hence Stunt Hangar was born.

Some people have different ways of doing things and that is okay. The end results is what all of us seek. That result is the satisfaction of having created something you can hold in your hand and be proud of. Most will never be at the top some will never progress past beginner but that's okay as long as fun and self satisfaction was gained along the way.Something can be learned from everyone, no one knows it all!  If you think you do you are particular aggravating to those of us who do. A little levity. Don't take things so seriously step back from the keyboard and go sand something. It will do more for your inner peace than bashing someone who you will never meet. Just sit back and wait for the results.

Stunt Hangar is on its tenth year and it has been a hard road. It is my hope it has brought enjoyment to everyone. It was my way of expressing my vision where I had control of the venue. It worked no doubt about it the numbers speak for them selves. I am not a biblical person but  “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.”

I ask for a little tolerance this Holiday season . Happy Thanksgiving

Your thoughts are very well put, Robert.  And you have my heartfelt thanks for building and running this site, it has been a great comfort to me during the years I have been on, and especially during the recent loss of my wife of 51 years.
You done good, as the old redneck proverb goes.  (Yes, I AM a redneck.)

This thread was not about me or Stunt Hangar. It was more into what I see from time to time on the actions of a few.

Happy Festivus. We can now proceed with the airing of grievances, which will be followed by the feats of strength.

Joking aside, you make some great points Robert. I totally agree with everything in your opening post.

I'm a good example of what Robert is speaking of.
A total C/L newbie (only flew a little bit of 1/2A C/L as a kid in the 70's), but pretty well versed in RC sailplanes, up to and including minor molding or composite parts, hollow molded composite repairs, and hotwiring and vacuum bagging whole wings and tails.
I've hot wired hundreds of sailplane wing cores for other people and myself through the years.
Even made it to the USA team for F3F (slope racing sailplanes) WC in 2008 in Slovakia. Our team made it to second place, 165 points (out of combined 51K points) behind the first place France team.

Sooo, while I'm relatively new to CL, I have a trick or two up my sleeve.
And, I actually LIKE to BUILD as much as I like to fly. And that is RARE in the RC contest Sailplanes theses days.

Please tolerate me!
:-)

I'm with you Chris. I've competed in RC helicopters, and RC IMAC events. I love to build. And there's a growing number of RC pilots not building. Getting harder to find RC kits, and harder to find RC guys to build with. So this forum has introduced me to lots of folks to trade with and talk about new building techniques.

Thanks Robert

Robert, that was eloquent and much needed.

I, and many others that a couple could not help but implicitly criticize after your post here, don't care what season it is for whom; if someone wishes me happiness at Christmas or any other religion's holiday, I am gratified for their well wishes. I'm not aware of any friends who feel otherwise. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, and it is for everyone. I wish all here a very happy Thanksgiving.

Lol, Shug, your family would probably expect that. You should maybe walk down the street and do it in a neighbor's front yard and see how they tolerate it. mw~ LL~

The seasonal outlook is a look back 10 years of all the great fliers and friends we have lost and a look forward to the new people who find us in one way or another. A thought to keep in mind is when a new comer arrives we welcome him and help them grow in our dwindling craft/sport. I am always trying to find new ways to promote this site and our craft. It is my hope that we can continue to grow for the next ten years. Believe it or not I have had 2 offers to buy this site for a substantial amounts in both cases. I looked to see if these people were members here or not and they were not. I had asked if they flew control line they said no. So in quick fashion I said no it not for sale. Knowing that this site would be dismantled and harvested for the emails and with the non compete clause it would prohibit me form opening another forum for 3 years.

Most missed the biggest hiccup this forum has ever undergone happened 2 nights ago when I tried to remove some old coding from the program. The entire site went blue screen. No recovery in sight. The reason this site is so costly is the space and resources we require to host this site. Our backup is on a separate 60 gig drive mounted in our server. The size of the backup is a 47 gig zip file meaning its many times larger on the main drive. So when this mishap occurred my heart fell through the floor. At 3 AM not many people to call for help. After 30 minutes down time we got it fixed. Sigh of relief.

I once read "walk talk and carry yourself as the type person you wish to be and you will become that type person" When a new comer posts a picture or has a comment you don't agree with state you argument in such a way that is non confrontational and to the point. There is no need to carry that grudge or malcontent on for years. You surely don't want to get the JACKET of being a grumpy old man with noting to offer but hate and discontent.

Running this site has taught me a lot in more ways than I can express.

Robert I could not agree with you more.  I sometimes wonder if newcomers on here are sometimes turned off by some of the responses I have seen in the past.  Every legitimate question asked on here deserves a legitimate and honest answer.  God knows I have had to fight some personal demons in the past and learn to take a deep breath and not have knee jerk reactions to things.

The archives on here are invaluable and it would be a disaster if they were ever lost.

Thanks Robert,

Mike

Again, well said, Robert, and Mike. We need to be kind to one another and especially to welcome newcomers with our friendship and knowledge. One of the reasons control line endures now is the camaraderie.

There ARE some opinionated characters here, and some are a bit on the harsh side.

But I have to say, objectively, as a newcomer, almost ALL (Like 99.99%) of you guys are complete gentlemen, and super nice. You'll mostly all go out of your way to help a new guy.

And, the skill level of the average guy here build wise is nothing short of awesome. Can't get that in the world of RC ARF's. Its a fabulous contrast. I love to build, just can't do that much of it since I stay at work Mon-Friday and then some.
Fact is though that my Sig Banshee was framed up offshore on this boat I run, so maybe I will re-think my last statement about not having time to build.

I'm off on a tangent, but I will say as a newbie, I'm not offended by opinionated people here, and they also have advice to offer if I am willing to take it. So don't worry too much, Robert. I'm happy here at SH.

Kind Regards to ALL,
Chris

Me? If you're asking, I run a support ship for the Pacific Missile Range at Port Hueneme Navy Base.
I'm a DoD contractor. We do offshore weapons testing, and also help warships test their proficiency before heading abroad.
If you weren't asking me, then nevermind...;-)
Happy Thanksgiving.

For myself, I can only say that (a) I'm a very opinionated character, but don't require anyone else to agree with my opinions; and (b) I'm perfectly happy for everyone else to be opinionated too - just as long as they don't require me to agree with THEIR opinions.  The world would be a boring place if we all liked the same things, and a whole lot worse than that if we all HAD to like the same things.

Oh, yes - I know it's early, but HAPPY CHRISTMAS to everybody, PC zealots included!

Regards
John

Someone wrote on one of the forums many years ago that since we can't see other people's expressions and inflections on a computer screen that it is easy to take comments the wrong way. For most of us, it is hard to put our feelings into words that can not be taken the wrong way by someone. For that reason, I try to always give others the benefit of doubt.

Everyone have a safe and Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanks Chris, now I know.  I have a Brother-in-law that was working off shore oil rigs, was gone most of the time.  He's the one I put up on a Hacker 1/2A and then was told he has vertigo.

Sanding is indeed wonderfully therapeutic.  But remember: if you're sanding a piece of 1/32" sheet down to 1/64", DON'T BACK-STROKE!
