Title: leather fillets
Post by: Bootlegger on April 29, 2016, 04:50:30 PM

I keep hearing install them wet, then dry, use model cement, then use aliphatic resin.  When you install yours what method have you found to work best?
  Thanks a lot

Yeah...I too would like to hear about the best way to install these things and where to get them?

Randy, seems like the name Freeman Leather.co comes to mind. You might try to google them.  Also I think that Walter Umland of builtrightflyright might have them..

Ty and others, what do you do when you get to the leading edge radius to keep the fillet from "puckering"??
  Again thanks...

This is no help for Gil, but if anybody is building an Impact or something with the same root airfoil and leading edge taper and wants to try a new fillet idea, contact me.

I showed my leading edge technique in a thread in the building forum section.

I was given a few links of very old and dried out leather fillets a few weeks ago. Wondered if I'd ever have the guts to use them since they were so dry if I did try to bend them they'd split or break outright! I am finally getting around to finishing construction of one of two projects that have been laying around since January 1996! Well I got out the fillets and soaked them in hot water for about 45 minutes and then slathered on some 30 min. epoxy to begin to bend them around the LE of my old Banchee wing! I pinned the puckers out and left them dry out for a day or so. They will be just fine and will shape up well with just a minor amount of sanding with fine to medium paper!

Have used these things since the mid-60's with excellent results no matter what their size!

I ordered a good supply from Freeman Leather.

Installation is simple.  Dampen first.  That makes them pliable, so they can be pulled around leading edge.  I use Ambroid or SIGment.  While still damp, and after glueing, I form a concave with a round tool.  Sanding not necessary, and they take dopes and paint very well.

There are many ways to install them and every one seems to think  theirs is the only way, so I won't post anymore due to all the arguments, etc. Do it your way, I'll do it my way since 1964 with NO problems. I get mine from Freeman Leather. Umland no longer carries them due to cost and  not enough sales to justify keeping them in stock.  Everyone seems to love epoxy type fillets, me, I hate them. D>K :)

IGNORE the flamers!!!!! Please post your answer here. We all know there are more than one way to skin a cat and there will always be dissent as to how to start. BUT, each method has it's pros and cons and then there's just plain choice.  PLEASE POST....
