Title: lead out legnth

Is there any suggested length that lead outs should extend from the wingtip?

Mine tend to extend about four inches when their finished.  You want them to be long enough that they don't get sucked into the wing at their shortest extent -- I don't know of any hugely important reason that they need to be kept snubbed short.

Having had a termination (eyelet) damaged once, I tend to make mine project a bout an inch and a half or two inches more than they need to so if necessary they could be shortened  by that much if necessary to make a repair to the leadout end without completely replacing the leadout.  I guess I'm a little paranoid about this kind of stuff but I sincerely believe in the old "saw" "If anything can go wrong, it will!".

   I'm doing what Randy does,
and for the same reason.
I keep them about 4.5 " beyond
the wingtip so that I could make
a repair.
   The only problem with longer
lead outs is that they love to trap
themselves in the car door.
I usually tuck the ends back inside
the adjustment slot.

Back in the old days of solid leadouts which were spaced as far apart as the length of the bellcrank, we never had to worry about the lines snagging one another where they were connected to the leadouts, but since I took to adjustable, closely-spaced flexible leadouts I've always been happier if the connections are no more than three or three-and-a-half inches beyond the leadout guide at neutral.  This is probably erring on the safe side, but it gives me peace of mind.

You will get answers all over the spectrum on this .  I use flexible cable leadouts and I am like Randy, I have plenty of length to play with.  I cut mine to 5 inches.  I have not used solid, stiff wire leadouts in years but I would say they would need to be shorter due to the susceptibility of getting bent.

Some vary the length significantly ( like 8") .
Matched lines, they don't encounter flipping the lead outs.
