Woodland/Davis Fun Day Contest results
« on: May 05, 2013, 10:15:50 PM »
Another Fun Day in the books. This was supposed to be a two day affair, but high wind kept any flying at all from happening on Sat. Sooooo.......
All events were flown today on two circles. It was still a bit windy in the morning and that kept scores low for the most part. Some even elected to pass first round, not knowing for sure if there would even be a second round. However, at about 1pm the wind started to calm a bit and everyone hustled to get a flight in. I elected not to fly at all because I find it too difficult to perform CD duties and still concentrate on my flying.
Temps were pretty cool most of the day and jackets were on all morning.
Thanks to all that pitched in to make this happen!

Yesterday was a complete no-go, the peak gust recorded in Davis was about 38 MPH about 9 in the morning. I drive through several micro-climates to get there, it was perfectly nice at the house, good all the way up 680 to the Benicia bridge, good on the 680 cutover to 80 (which is frequently the worst place and all the trees have branches only on the south/downwind side), and good up to about Fairfield. Then somewhere in the 4 miles from Fairfield to the Nut Tree it turned into a wind tunnel. Drove back about 10 AM, same thing, it was perfect at home again.

Today it was a little ugly for OTS/Classic and ADV, it got more tolerable during Expert, then degenerated for the first round of Stunt 25 as the Sun was coming out. When the  Sun came out for good over lunch, it was good the rest of the day, and even got a little dead and thermally at times for the second rounds of ADV and EXP. You could see the dramatic effect on the scores, that was no ballooning, the conditions were much better and the flights reflected it.

The contest worked out great, and congratulations!  Well done.

And many thanks to Clint for organizing the event and the tireless crew of locals who prepared the field so well, and to the usual suspects for standing out in the wind and (some) rain and doing the judging. I bugged out after what turned out to be the first round, thinking there would be no second rounds!

You weren't the only one, Mike. A few people did that and missed the best air of the day.

Crud! I thought we had made a collective decision not to fly any more! Now I am in Stunt Hanger annals forever with the lowest scores in the two events I flew. I guess I need to practice wind flying a little more. Had a great time anyway and always nice to see the guys. You should post  a photo of Carter's biplane stunter; I bet Pete or Heman will have one.

Yup, the contest did get better after you left...wait a minute, I didn't mean that as it sounds. Actually I was one of those who had to unpack their car when the flying resumed. You will get a chance to redeem yourself in both PAMPA stunt and Stunt 25 in June at the "Stuntfest 2013" contest.  8)

I don't think Clint will mind me answering these since I was there. LA-25 planes: At first we thought it might become the Skyray event but that has not been the case. This contest saw a Skyray, Sakitumi, Shark 402, Jamison Special and a kit built Smoothie powered by an FP-25 with 10/4 prop. At the past contests Ringmaster, Flite Streak and probably some others I can't remember competed. I recommend the Shark 402, built per plans with an FP-20 with a 9/4 APC prop setup to Brett's specifications. I'm biased though because that is what I flew.

The P-40 was built by local Advanced Flier Brian Moore. It is the RSM kit There were some modifications such as a molded turtle deck and fully sheeted wing. The canopy is from the kit and power is a T&L ST-46. Finish is dope, I think Brodak for the colors and Randolph matt finish for the clear. Flies great and a very clean build. 8)

Thanks, Bill

I used the old reliable Skyray 35, this time with a brand new OS-25LA-s RN and a 9-3.8 APC.

Okay thanks fellas, there's a Primary Force skeleton and an OS25 fsr floating around here.  That should work together well enough so I can come out and join you guys.
