Interesting Find In MA Magazine
« on: December 13, 2011, 12:09:38 PM »
I keep my bathroom stocked with TP and magazines, to be used when the first item is out of stock.  "Nuff said.  Today, while waiting for the machinery to kick in, I reached over and grabbed the first magazine sticking out of the stack.  It was the October, 2011 issue of Model Aviation.  I flipped through the pages out of boredom and happened to stop on a page that had Safety Comes First as the header.  It is a column written by Dave Gee.

Anyway, I grazed through the paragraphs that highlighted different issues such as a 4 stroke engine starting by itself and hot dog RC pilots flying too close to spectators.  Actually, they were all good reads.

The one that caught my eye was a report submitted by a reader about an out of control RC Racer that flew into his parked car and actually crashed through the window.  After describing the accident, the man was quoted as saying, "This incident illustrates how important insurance is.  The test pilot had responsibly placed a rider on his homeowner's insurance to anything RC plane-related as he test-flies many planes of others and consistently his own.  Insurance covered repairs on my vehicle in full."

Strangely enough, no mention of AMA insurance was made, since it wasn't used.  I would have thought that the referenced story would have been a good place for Mr Gee to point out the value of insurance like from AMA, in case the pilot had no other.

Now, I am concerned if a special rider is required on HO policies to cover damage from acts of neglect or happenstance by the policyholder.  AMA lists their coverage as secondary to Homeowner's or other liability policies.  Are such other policies absolutely required?  Is it necessary to specifically include model airplane coverage in your homeowner's policy?  Will not including modeling activities in the policy result in refused claims?  Will that affect the AMA coverage since they provide secondary insurance?

AMA insurance is supplimental insurance and to the best of my knowledge it always was. Of course if you are single, non home owner nor have any valuable assets it then is your primary insurance if you have complied with all of the provisos that they require.

Dennis, my question and concern is it necessary to inform the HO insurance company that modeling is one of your activities?  If not, would they still honor a claim?
