Title: Laser Cutting
Post by: Howard Rush on April 21, 2013, 07:35:22 PM
I have some friends in Seattle who are thinking of getting a better laser cutter than they have if they can get enough business to make a go of it.  Any of you kit makers need stuff cut?  Email me if you're interested.

I got an update today.  They are getting a laser that has a 4' x 3' bed and that will cut 1" plywood.  It ought to get through 1/16" 4-lb balsa OK.

With that kind of power would any balsa be left? LL~ LL~ LL~

It's adjustable.

The bigger laser is reported to have a finer beam focus than the dinky one, so it should be better at cutting balsa.

Are they interested in one-off jobs, or just scads of stuff for kit manufacturers?

One of the problems with laser cutting lightweight sheet balsa (under 6lb.) is Fire ~^

Either.  I think they expect more of the former.

I had an RSM kit that was "burnt" thru several knots. It's looks like a hazard. Make sure they have a Fire Ext. on hand!

What's their price range and do you have to supply the balsa?

Cheers, Jerry

How about posting their contact info, website URL, etc, for everyone to see or is it some big secret for a reason?

They aren't modelers, so inquiries may require some interpretation.  I'll help if I can.

With a 4 ft bed it sounds like they might be able to cut fuselage sides without knitting them together.

I think the key for them obtaining a lot of orders from modelers is  they price their services in the least expensive area.  Right now, the price of lazer cutting is all over the place, some are plain ridiculous.......
