Title: Landing pad?
Post by: frank mccune on October 14, 2017, 07:29:34 AM
After reading ROOTBEARD'S post re a takeoff pad, what our club needs is a landing pad!  We can hand launch most of our planes but landing in grass that is about 4" high I a problem.  Our flying site is covered with a very dense weed free grass that causes the plane to flip over upon landing.  The grass is mowed at least once a week and looks like a putting green with long grass.  I am up to 3" wheels but still need larger wheels.   Perhaps a nose wheel is the answer to our problem.

It would certainly add a bit of additional skill to hit the landing pad! Lol

                                                                                                         All of the best,

                                                                                                         Frank McCune

Cut the outer ring where the plane actually needs to roll down to 1 1/2 inches. The whole circle doesn't actually need to be cut that low.

The problem with a "landing" pad is the ends. It will rip landing gear out. Ask me how I know.

I was practicing on a circle at Brodak's one year and the engine shut off just at the right time for me to setup and ladright where I took off. The plane touched down one the concrete pad and rolled right to the end. The wheels dropped into the edge and ripped the gear out. I spent the night in the hotel glueing them back in. 😒

Randy C. probably remember the circle at the KCK City Park.  Had take off strips East and West side of circle with a center pad.   Was told never try landing on the pads.   Wonder if anybody remember the little asphalt strip at KCMo Swope Park.  It been well over several decades since I've been out there and the pad was there but the ground had been dug down and leveled for amore soccer fields.
