Presidential visit
« on: February 15, 2014, 11:25:44 PM »
President Obama arrived in Palm Springs yesterday and is staying here this weekend. The local R/C club hosts an annual Jet Rally at their field roughly 15 miles from where the President is staying. In order to be allowed to have this event, the pits were swept before the event with a bomb sniffing canine. This dog sniffed all the planes, field boxes etc. There were EIGHT Secret Service personnel there. Two of them conducted visual inspections of the aircraft. Then they allowed the event to take place. Also there was an FAA officer in attendance. No wonder some of the R/C guys are paranoid LOL!!!

What did you have to do to apply for a waiver?

You need an special AMA waiver to operate the jets in the first place, and that is a good place to start with a lot of information already in place, such as a list of participants. The event has probably been scheduled for a considerable length of time, and considering the expense that all concerned had already put out, I would guess that the AMA could intercede with the FAA for the event organizers,(since it is the FAA that issues the NOTAM) and the FAA could then coordinate with the Secret Service to get the inspections and grant the waiver. I don't know how much advanced notice they had of the POTUS visit, but I can imagine it wasn't much, and if all that red tape was worked through, I'm impressed at the efforts of all involved. May be evidence of all the liaison work the AMA has done with the Government on the behalf of model aviation and the current "drone scare." It also might help with possible future waivers for events that are already scheduled and can deal with short or no notice visits of our friends from Washington D.C.
The big revelation will be how the Community Organizer in Chief will have the Government buy some rain for the farmers in California!

I thought that when he was in Fresno that he was going to beat a drum, have a smoke maker and do some chanting to make it rain. Very disappointed that he got out the rubber check book again along with his famous pen.

The president and his wife went for a walk, and they came upon a small lady's purse. "What shall we do?" his wife asked. He answered, "lets open it and see if we can find out who owns it." So he looks in and takes out a small compact, and upon opening it, he says: "I don't recognize this person", and drops it back in. His wife says "gimme that" and looking in, she spies the compact , opens it, rolls her eyes at him and says: you dummy, it's me!  LL~

Wade ,

Good information to anyone that puts on a contest, we live close to a major airport and get the notices  from the authorities  about not flying during these high security events ,

always wondered  who to contact if  a event happened at contest time ,  things like your post is what  makes this forum great,  but we need to stay on topic

Dennis Moritz has it right. This is supposed to be a model airplane forum. These infantile and degrading remarks denigrate our hobby and reflect poorly on all of us. We are better than that. The Obama-haters have their own forums they can utilize without poisoning this fine and useful one. Bill Little's "no politics" warning on the Building section should apply generally to this forum, but apparently it doesn't.

If anyone cares, any full-scale pilot can tell you about being grounded or operations limited by presidential and other VIP flight operations going back 30 years, in all administrations. Nothing new here. Any reasonable person can see that operation of 250 mph model jets near the Presidential aircraft is cause for concern, and the RC pilots themselves seem to have no problem with those concerns.

Get a grip, guys. Keep it about model planes.
