Title: LA HEAT update
Post by: frank carlisle on July 20, 2006, 05:09:52 PM
Jan and I bent landing gear wire for the Heat this afternoon. And I got a pair of 2" Brodak spinners in the mail today. And the nacelles are mostly finished so I taped the plane together and Jan and I weighed it and checked it for balance and just sorta stood at the table looking at it and discussing how nuch fun it was going to be to fly. And how big it is.

Minus fillets and finish it weighs 59 oz. It balances pretty close. So much so that I think the difference will be made with the use of a tube or tongue muffler.

I put 2 3/4" main gear and 2 1/4" nose gear. I think I'm going to put one more pilot in it.

Looks like it's going to be about a $700.00 plane by the time I get it to the circle.

 Lookin good Frank! **)
 Here's one for ya-if you should end up going with a pseudo military scheme, you could complete the look by substituting a slightly longer canopy and have a pilot and co-pilot inside. >:D >:D >:D ;D
 I would probably expect something in your mailbox tomorrow. ;)

Frank;
    That is one huge airplane! It is good looking though. I think it needs a red and orange color scheme.

Looks like it's going to be about a $700.00 plane by the time I get it to the circle.

Cost of a PA plane.
$400.00 for the engine,
$100.00 for the pipe,
$  20.00 header,
$  40.00 spinner
$  38.00 prop
$   7.00 clunk tank
$  50.00 Tom Morris controls
$  15.00 Poly-Span
$  15.00 Canopy & Pilot
$100.00 CF wheel pants and CF Lg & wheels
$150.00 Wood
$100.00 Paint and sand paper (conservative side)
-------------------------
$1035

I am sure there are some things I have left out like the glue and CF vial and a ton of other stuff. I figure when I am done with a new plane I have $2000.00 in it. If everything is new.

Robert;
    You need to keep that kind of information a secret. If My wife saw that break down I would never be allowed to build a new airplane. My newest scale plane being that will be built from a kit is as follows, and I haven't started construction yet.
Kit                                    $149
Cockpit Kit                        $ 14
Drop Tank and bomb kits $ 15
dummy engine kit             $ 10
engine                              $110
Retracts                            $220
Electronic Control System $300

Total                                  $818
Not included is wheels, hardware, and finishing materials.

I can sneak this by the wife by not buying it all at the same time, and I get home first so she never sees the packages go into the shop. All she knows is every so often I come out of the shop with a new airplane.

Yup.........we ain't talking Ringmasters here. A lot of folks think we fly control line because it's cheaper than R/C. HAR HAR HAR.

Now let's add in the cost of going to contests shall we?

Don't worry Leroy........your wife will never see this thread and your secret is safe with me.

WWWARBIRD has sent me a color drawing of the LA HEAT that I plan on following. I think it is a fantastic paint scheme. What do you guys think? Is this sharp or what?

Thanks very much, Wayne.

Frank, really looks nice, like your color choice. Hope i can come close to your craftsmanship and weight. Did you do anything to stiffen the stab. and elevators?  Ron.  y1 y1

RON, I'm sure your Heat is going to come out very nice. I'm positive you're no beginner at this. So I know it will be great when you're done. I didn't do anything other than build the stab and flaps according to plan. They're very rigid as is. Also I didn't taper them or the rudder. That's where they get their strength and you're going to need the weight to counter balance the engines.

Yeah only two stars ------ should be a cake walk paint job. Still very patriotic though.

Thanks again Wayne..........You're going to be very popular.
