Title: LA HEAT needs ride to Osh Gosh by Golly
Post by: frank carlisle on July 22, 2011, 02:01:44 PM
The LA Heat is in Detroit and needs a ride to Osh Kosh this weekend.
I thought we had a ride for it but the vehicle wasn't big enough.
Can anybody help?

Hello Detroit area modelers, or any passing through Detroit,

Frank and I are trying to find anyone who would be willing and able to safely transport the "LA Heat" from Detroit to Oshkosh so that I could pick it up there. It's a big bird with about a 65" wingspan, roughly 53" nose to tail and is not a take apart plane.

I'm planning on getting to the EAA grounds around 8:00pm or 9:00pm Sunday evening. I am staying right on the EAA grounds until after the daily airshow is over on Tuesday. If anyone would possibly be able to help with this it would be greatly appreciated. If you are able to help please give me a call on my cell anytime day or night at 507-402-4050. If I'm not able to pick up right away it's only because I'm at work. Just leave a message and I will call you back as quickly as I can.

 Thank you,

 Wayne Willey

 Dave,

Has anyone considered the greyhound shipping method?

Frank will have to build a simple wooden crate to ship the model in. The real limiting factor is the size maximum it has to conform to the following

30 inches X 47 inches X 82 inches maximum dimensions. I have a feeling that the 47 inches will be to small.

I went to their website and had a quote for a box of those dimensions go bus station to bus station from Detroit to New York and the cost was $62.00

You have to drop it off at the nearest greyhound station and the be picked up at the station at the far end. But for stuff this size it is the least expensive way to ship (cost less that the Gas would)

I have shipped full size stunters this way before, and the models always arrived undamaged. The box does not have to be very sturdy as it only has to surive one trip, it can be constructed out of masonite (how I made mine) just so it prevents crushing you anchor the model to the box by using zip ties (wire ties) anchoring the landing gear and tail wheel to one of the crate sides.

Just a suggestion to consider

The Heat will require a nuch larger box.

The Heat will require a nuch larger box.

I had a feeling that the fuse was longer than 47 inches. The other dimensions seemed more than enough.

If you detached the rudder would it come in under 47 "?

No cutting the tail. Thought it might make it by just detaching the rudder.

Oh well guys I tried. I'm out of ideas.

We have a new destination------tell 'em where we need to get it to Wayne.

Hey Jeff----I came to my senses.

What we need is a buddy with a cargo plane whose destination puts him close to the Heats destination.

BTW----The plane was built from an RSM kit and it flies really nice if you can manage the two engines. Sometimes we nailed the run but we didn't nail the run often enough. Someone with time and good engine skills could turn it into a winner.

Yeah there's no real rush on this, it's just that with the timing of all of it an Oshkosh meeting could have worked out really well. It would have involved only minimal cost and little headache.

Thanks for the suggestions but shipping it is just not going to be an option that we're going to consider, too much work, risk, and cost involved there. Neither Frank nor myself are planning to make the 12 hour one way trip to each other for a handoff either, the bottom line is that it's just not that important to either of us.

Logistically speaking Frank is located in Detroit, MI and I'm in Albert Lea, MN. For those not familiar Albert Lea is in extreme south central Minnesota, right at the intersection of Interstates 90 and 35. In fact I work only one mile west of that interchange 6 or 7 days a week so I would be very easy to find. We realize that it's a longshot but if anyone would happen to be making a trip through or from the Detroit area to my area that would also be able to safely transport the 'Heat please let Frank or myself know, maybe we can come up with a plan.

Thanks for any help on pulling this one off. y1

It isn't so much that this isn't important to me --rather-- I am confident that with our huge network of modeling friends the Heat will get to Wayne and we can wait patiently for that to happen.

And when he gets it, will probably convert to electric and cure all engine problems. LL~ LL~ LL~ Really don't you know someone in the trucking industry like a driver.   I remember one club that the driver would stop at the FOX plant and cart fuel back to them.   H^^
