Title: LA 46 and "new" Powermaster fuel
Post by: peabody on January 19, 2015, 12:07:37 PM
I'm flying a white plastic Vector with an LA 46.
I have NEVER had an aeroplane get so greasy! Nor seen one as bad....
And the purple stains the plastic.

Are others having this much fun?

Thanks

Last year I ran some GMA10% 11-11 in a racing airplane that was painted with white Klasskote epoxy paint, and it even stained the epoxy paint red. The local hobby shop had enough fuel in stock that I was able to find a few gallons that didn't have the red dye. I didn't notice an over abundance of oil, though.

Powermaster was made aware of the whole purple fuel issue last year, and issued a statement saying that all subsequent fuel would be clear.

However, that doesn't save you from fuel in the pipeline.

I solved the problem by building an airplane that's white with purple trim, to go with the tint in the fuel.

That's a good idea Tim

I am still amazed as to the HUGE amounts of oil all over/under/inside the plane...

might be "OFF TOPIC" but
my "Tornado Fuel" Dealer takes "Barrel" orders like "T" - Castor and "T" - Methanol.
"T"- Nitro 1000ml ( 99,9%.).
Thats why I mix my own brew.
Just works for me "BEST".

The bottom of my grandfather's P-47 has been stained purple because of the fuel.  Unless you wipe it off immediately, it will stain.  I learned that lesson the hard way.  ''

LA-46's can be messy especially if set-up in a big prop/low RPM fashion. Don't blame the fuel for that one. As far as the purple problem goes, Powermaster has already addressed the issue. Kudos to them for continuing to produce control line specific fuel to include FAI, GMA 10/22, GMA 10/29 (all castor), and a RoJett blend 10% nitro, 17% synthetic, 5% castor) that never was dyed purple. 8)

To the contrary, I have a 5 gallons out of a case that are purple.

I have a Nobler doing the same thing with a LA 46. Someone suggest the front bushing.

Someone suggest the front bushing. ???.
If so
you should see little drops of castoroil between propdrive and the end of crankshaft bushing.
Could be a worn out/oversize (dia) bushing.
For my understanding,
an engine with oil leak is hard to adjust ,running lean / runaways ,
like "fresh gas" leaking backplates.
A flying Buddy once had leaking LA backlate with unstable lean runs.
As bigger the gap as more oil Content (%) is needed.
My OS LA 46 Manual says:
20% Castor ,
works for me , no ABN liner Problems so far.
My OS LA 46 is spitting light yellow casteroil (Honey) out off its muffler,
"EASY" to clean.

Well on my Nobler its dead nuts - runs great. Part of me says leave it alone and fly it until its oil soaked. The other part wants it running clean so it will last longer.

Well....at least it's not me...
I like purple...but it doesn't coat evenly enough to be called a "finish".
Have fun!
