Krylon clear coating...
« on: January 07, 2016, 10:31:14 AM »
I have used Krylon a couple of times, but I don't really understand the paint chemistry.

The first application was to protect a felt marker signature and it has done that job well after a
couple of years being "slimed" by my 4 strokes.

The second application was a mixed bag; I sprayed it over foam wing that had a fabric reinforced leading edge and
hard points coated with polyurethane. Wherever the polyurethane or my flame painting was (acrylic enamel), it worked
fine.  But the uncoated foam wilted away like last month's produce.

I Krylon to be treated like a lacquer ?  I thought (wrongly)  that it's an enamel.

Rustoleum  will attack foam if not sealed good.

Krylon is not fuel proof for much over 5%N if that. It is great for electric's.

There are enamel paints that work over foam (Sig used to sell some), but when you're compounding an enamel paint, particularly rattle-can, it's a lot easier to use solvents that attack foam.

I'm pretty sure that was a lacquer, but there was some thread here a couple of years ago that mentioned that rattle-can paint chemistries have changed in the last few years (thanks, EPA!), and if I remember correctly it's a lot easier to meet VOC standards with an enamel.  So, Krylon may not be Krylon any more.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Krylon H2O is foam safe, but not fuel proof. It's acrylic paint. Then you could cover with SLC or shoot a known fuel proof clear like that Max 2k
