Title: KLETT Hinges
Post by: Bob Reeves on October 07, 2015, 04:03:33 AM
Coming to the realization I will not live long enough to utilize some of the items I have acquired over the years. One item I have many more of than I could possibly use is KLETT hinges. What I am thinking of doing is putting a package together with enough hinges for a typical stunt ship and selling the packages for a reasonable amount. What I am not sure of is how many hinges would be a good number and what would be a reasonable price per package. The price would need to include packaging and shipping costs.

Suggestions, comments welcome..

Hi Bob. On my twister i used 14. And the cheapest package I've mailed was $1.60, so those in a little envelope is like $2.00 plus the envelope is $.50.

Hope that helps a little.

H Bob.
Looks like my initial reply left for outer space! You know what that's like!  ;-)

Looking at two SIG Magnums, one using 20, the other 22.

Let me know when price is determined.

How about $6 for 25 shipped.

I've used Klett hinges for year, and swear by them. Due to their
size it is only necessary to use 14 on a full size competition stunt
ship; four per flap and three per elevator for a total of 14. HobbyKing
sells a hinge that is a very close copy, just slightly smaller (almost
unnoticeable) for $1.50 for a package of ten.

Thanks for the input gang, have also received a couple off line messages. Rather that selling a large batch, thinking I could serve the hobby better by breaking them into small lots and spreading the wealth so to speak. Thinking along the lines of $3.50 shipped for 15 and limiting a single order to 4 or something like that. The jury is still out and may take a few days to nail down the exact deal and put everything together.

Looks like I have between 3 and 4 hundred of the RK-3 hinges.

Still working on getting stuff figured out. Signed up for the free eBay shipping account on Stamps.com so I could easily ship first class and discovered I can buy a 10 pack of padded envelopes at Wal-Mart for around $5.00. Ordered shipping labels that will work with the Stamps software but will take a few days to get here. I'll get the costs added up and hoping I will be able to stay at the $3.50 for 15 estimate.

I'd love to get four as well.  Probably a lifetime supply but, like so many, consider them the very best I've used.  I will also check out Steve Moon's suggestion at Hobby King for long term consideration.

If these are the large Klett hinges I'm interested in a maximum amount. I haven't seen a package of them in such a long time I don't remember the part number, just that they were their large hinges. Like someone mentioned I have soem larger projects in mind now that I am getting time to build again. Four packages the maximum? Let me know the details when ready.
  Thanks a lot,

Wow! Had no idea I would get the response I have received both on-line and via PM. Maybe not charging enough  ;D

Naw, I just really want to cover my costs and do the stunt community right. I will be getting back to everyone that said they wanted some plus make an announcement in this thread when I'm all set to start shipping.

Jack

Sure seems that way, with all the response I have received not sure I will have enough hinges to be able to keep the limit at 4 packs. I want to try and make sure everyone gets a piece of the pie.

Ouch, just went to the USPS site and discovered the minimum postage for a 1 ounce package is $2.54. The padded envelopes will have to mailed using the package rate because of the bulk and we have to add $0.50 for the durn envelope.

Bear with me as I'm thinking and calculating as I type..

My ~680 sq/in Latency has 5 hinges on each flap and 3 on each side of the elevator. I double up the hinges at the flap tips as every hinge failure I have seen was at the flap tip. This makes a total of 16 hinges for what I would say is the minimum number for a typical stunt ship. Lets increase the quantity for each package by one.

Also found a package of 100 that still had the price I paid, $0.20 each, I believe it's well worth a nickle to count, package and ship the hinges.

All of this boils down to.....

16 hinge package for $4.00 with a starting order max of three(3) to stretch the stash as far as possible.
Shipping will be $3.00 for anything up to and including order max.
1 pack would be $4.00 + $3.00 = $7.00.
2 packs would be 2 X $4.00 + $3.00 = $11.00.
3 packs would be 3 X $4.00 + $3.00 = $15.00.

This is USA only, sorry but just not worth the hassle of shipping outside the US.
If I have any hinges left over after the initial orders I will let everyone know and be open for re-orders.

Guess the right thing to do is once I have the labels and envelopes in hand is to place an add in the classified section with order details.
Probably will be requesting email with shipping address plus mailing a check.
For those that have already responded, sorry for having to change the game mid stream and hope you understand my initial numbers were mostly guesses.
Please wait until I have everything ready and follow the instructions I will post in the classified section. Shouldn't be more than a few days.

Thanks
Bob

Steve, do these have the flash you have to clean off like the DuBro?  I am not encouraged by the fact that the leaves are sitting there with one leaf upright even in the photos on the website.

The neat think about the Kletts is that they would easily fall under their own weight, because they lacked molding flash around the barrels.

OK, no reason to not go ahead and kick this off. Please understand I am still waiting on shipping labels from Stamps.com and it may be the middle of next week before I actually start shipping hinges.

This is the add in the Classified section.

Please read the entire add before placing your order.

Thanks

Wow! mail inbox is humming...

Should have noted, in trying to be as fair as possible I want to give those that posted in and to this thread a chance to place a real order.
This may result in a delay in confirming your email order as I feel I need to wait at least a day to insure those posters have had a chance to see the Classified post and decide if they want to place an order or not.

I will be confirming orders as soon as I can but probably not before tomorrow AM.

Just be a little understanding, I will confirm your order as soon as I feel it's safe and won't be hurting anyone's feelings.

Yes I will.. Pretty sure I already have more orders than I have hinges. I'll start the sorting process in the morning and try not to keep everyone in suspense and longer than necessary.

Well durn, now I wished I had made the limit 2 packs instead of 3 but it's a done deal and can't change it now. Had no idea, received 30+ orders and can only fill less than half.
Doing the best I can do to be fair, still waiting on a few that I know are at the T.Trials to wrap it up.

Sorry, if you haven't already received a confirmation email, odds are pretty good I won't be able to fill your order.

Or maybe just make my own from little rectangles cut from plastic milk cartons, toothpicks, and CA.   ~^

Worst come to worst, we can always resort to buying the Dubro hinges and removing those lousy brass pins, and substituting a pin like I know a lot of us have been doing. :'(

Could go back to the old brass/aluminum/copper tubing cut into short pieces with wire down thru them and cloth holding them to the surfaces.  You kids have not seen the ones with bent metal strips wrapped around a hardwood dowel glued to the moving surface.
