KLASS KOTE question
« on: May 30, 2020, 04:22:37 PM »
I want to paint the Epiphany with Klass Kote Yellow.  This is a question for anyone who has used Klass Kote Yellow.  Did you have to shoot a coat of white before you shot the yellow so it will cover without having to put on 1/2 dozen coats of paint.  Nate at Klass Kote says the yellow has titanium in it and a couple of coats without a basecoat of white should/maybe cover it.  I am not disputing his word at all, just want to know if anyone has had experience with this.

Thank you
Mike

I don't know about the have to part, but my yellow ringmaster with white wings is Klass Kote. I did a base of white so the yellow had an easier chance of full coverage, and potentially a more consistent yellow with no shading anywhere. But I have never tried without, so I don't know if it's needed.

I think you will have less heartache if you use the blocking coat.

Mike,

What primer are you using!  I used the white Klass Kote primer and red normally doesn't cover that well, but I had no problems over the white primer. Other wise use a blocking coat, it doesn't need to be heavy just a dusting to give uniform color.  Good luck.

Mike,

Yellow is a great color.

Why Klass Kote?

Short answer: Yes, use the white primer and get uniform color or it will show thru a single topcoat of KlassKote yellow. I have just such a plane....

With the uniform primer color, there is no reason to put on a second coat of color. Save work. Save $$$. Save weight!

Thanks to everyone for their input.

Just for 100% disclosure, Mike asked me, to, but I hadn't seen his PM until now. In any case, I have never used yellow.

Different colors vary *wildly* in their ability to cover, even among the same colors. "Dark Red" covers very poorly, "Federal standard red" covers very well.

Thank you Brett.  I am going to use a blocking coat just to be safe.  I called Nate and he told me there was Titanium in their yellow and that should help it cover better.  I will probably do a test piece to see how it comes out.  Thank you again.
