Kits are scarce ?
« on: September 25, 2008, 03:36:41 PM »
Are balsa based kits scarce or what ?

Brodaks out of stock of some for long time ?

I hear balsa , quality balsa that is, is now scarce ?

Should we stock up from direct suppliers ?

there is a pretty big call for top notch balsa at the moment - and not a lot to go around  seems China is buying up large quantities for the ARF market.

Last I heard, Brodak was having trouble sourcing ood wood for their kits - hence the shortages on some of them.

Get what you can as far as balsa goes!!!

Guess what's inside the blades on those big wind generators.

isnt it honeycomb carbon fiber?  it would be lighter than balsa and stronger...  thats just a guess though.  i hope its not balsa...  balsa is for airplanes only! as per me.  R%%%%

Yes balsa blades about 100 feet long and what happens when they are hit with heavy winds like hurricanes?

The blades for those large wind turbines are generally 60 ft. long and
are made using a composite sandwich method. The innermost or center
layer is usually balsa. Then there are several layers of fiberglass and
other composites. They are then vacuum bagged. Lots and lots of balsa
being used there.
