Kit bashing "Tantrum"
« on: October 31, 2008, 01:53:27 PM »
Heres my rendition of the Cardinal from a Brodak kit.   It's waiting on some paint masking for lettering and numbers and any last minute ideas on trim, etc.  Then final clear coats.  The wing was built on the rod system, did'nt turn out half bad #^    I'm trying to lure my son away from c/l racing to fly a few PA patterns with this. (He helped with the re-design of the kit)  There were some disagreements about lines and such, thus the "name".  Tantrum. S?P HB~>[/img]

James,

Very nice and it looks so much better than a Cardinal. Nice "Kit Bashing". Good Luck with the flying. Have you picked a name for it yet?

Hi, Jim...nice to see you're getting back into flying. We've missed ya! Mike, too...

The forum allows 1,000 kb in pictures per post, so you can post multiple pics if you resize and compress them appropriately. Many of us use IrfanView, which is a free download. You can get it from TwoCows...Google for it.
Ya gotta download the version for your confuser, either PC or Mac, and Windows or Other. It's not a big program; less than 1,000 kb, so download time isn't bad. There's a "how to" on here about dealing with pictures in the Administration 'forum' (top of the page). Rudy Taube started the thread, and the title is "Posting Photos?". I think this will give you most the info you need. If not, reply to that thread, or send me an email or PM and I'll try to help.

James if the son likes racing a lot don't push him too hard.   My son tried stunt several times, but, the last time he said not to ask him to fly a stunt plane anymore.  He loves the pull  of the racing planes.  I even tried to start a racing event for stunt planes, but, while talking about it got too much flak.  I still think three stunt planes like the P-39,  P-51 or even Warhawk would look great three up and no shut-offs or fast fills.  Have fun,  DOC Holliday

WOW!!! I'll second that. The Cardinal is one of those designs I love to hate, to me its just butt ugly. Your rendition really makes this design palatable, all the good flying characteristics in a much better looking form.

Congrats, it really looks great.

Your point is well taken, Mike's love really is racing and I would'nt want to put any kind of bad taste in his mouth over somthing like pressure to do PA.   It's a small miracle just to have racing time with your son these days, never mind the event it self!  We both enjoy the people who race, they are great company to compete  and hang out with as are all of you who are PA  guys. H^^ H^^ H^^  Thanks very much for all the encouragement! #^

A bunch of Sea Furys,  Bearcats, Corsairs and Mustangs would be a kick for a sport racing event. JT could enter a P-38! Gotta say, when I flew NWSR at last month's Fall Fallies, I had a big grin on my face during the race, which doesn't happen when I'm flying stunt. I got very dizzy and wanted a cot between heats...tho I know that if I'd just sat down and closed my eyes, I'd have been barfing.... :o  We flew two 140 lap heats, back to back, with about 10 minutes between. Hey, I'm 63... ''

I do think that some events attract folks who don't want to push their flying skills, tho they eventually find that there are flying skills required that just aren't as obvious as stunt flying. Maybe Mike will come to Stunt as he gets more flying under his belt. Combat kinda prepares and leads into Stunt, I think. Consider getting Mike into 80mph Combat. There's going to be a series of 80mph contests at Centralia/Chehelis Municipal Airport, run by Jeff Rein and the Broadway Bod Busters. Look in Flying Lines for details. We can fly stunt on the concrete at the same time.  H^^ Steve

Not sure how anyone improves on the shape of the Cardinal (Cobra) rudder..

Very nice work.

Larry,

Well there you've hit on something.  In one of the line drawing iterations that Mike and I drew up for this project  maintained the original rudder shape and had a "classic" Cobra cowl shape at the nose and the cobra-ish wheel pants.  Were I ever to do this kit again, I would put false ribs in and move the wheel mounts out another rib bay to get that low & wide stance of the gear.  (Wide rib spacing issue) Thanks for the thought! :)

James - I have done the similar thing, i.e. remove the covering on an ARF Cardinal & recover with silkspan & dope. Mine looks OK, but the weight is really too much. Still working on the flying(with a ST.46). Dont remember the exact wght, but 52-53 oz. comes to mind. What is the wght of yours? Regards, Ed

Ed,

The all up weight is 46 oz. with a LA .46 and Randy Smith tube muff. and metal tank.   Minus the last clear coat and num.s /letters.   Covered with polyspan and dope finish.  The tail feathers are built up  and less than half the weight of the kit wood.  !/2 in. stab.(sheeted truss) and ribbed elev. to save weight back there at the end of that long tail moment. The balance is near perfect to start with. We'll see how that works out (the CG) when it flies.   D>K

Heres some pics of the finished "tantrum"  for your approval.  The finished weight is 50 0z. ready to fly.  The toothpick prop is there just for looks. I'm thinking of going with an APC 10.5 x 4.5 on that OS .40 with a 4oz. tank.  There's also another 4.5 0z. tank for mounting to go along with a OS .46 if the .40 proves too wimpy. The .40 seems on the lower limits for power. :-\

Can you believe it, it's raining in SOCAL right now %^@  but the weather liar says there might be a clear day this Sunday to get the first flights in.  We'll see D>K

Try the Thunder Tiger 11 x 4.5 "Cyclone" prop on the .40LA. It works pretty well on Pete Ferguson's, whenever Pete is not lounging in the Carribean. Same muffler, even.  y1 Steve
