King Orange International
« on: August 07, 2007, 06:53:31 PM »
The monthly meeting of the X47 Flyers was held tonight with the main topic of discussion being the KOI.

There was a majority vote for the X47 Flyers to continue hosting the KOI.  Tommy Weedman will be the CD with assistance from his brother, Lynn.  The dates will be in January on MLK weekend (pending approval of the sanction application).  The location will be in Starke, FL as it has been for the past two years.

If anyone has any questions or concerns about the KOI, please contact Tommy as he is handling all correspondence concerning the KOI from here on.  His number is in the PAMPA directory.

Mentioned it to the wife and response was too far to drive.  I tried to tell her we could see the daughter and grandkids before and after the contest.  Have fun,  DOC Holliday

Walter:

The date change back to January was at the request of many of the contestants who flew in last year's contest and some who said they couldn't attend because of the March dates.

If you would like to discuss the KOI any further, feel free to phone me at 904 797-5079 and I will talk to you about it in person.

Garf:

I do not have a means to scan in a map right now, but will do so later.  If you go to Google Earth or MapsOnUs and put in 2300 N. Temple Ave.,  Starke, FL 32091, that will take you to the site.  It is at the intersection of N. Temple (US 301) and E. Market Rd., between N. Temple and the railroad tracks.  If you look on Google Earth, you will see a large building with a paved parking lot on the south side and a grass area on the north side.  Those are the two flying areas.  Hope this helps for now.

I would guess about five hours from Ft. Meyers.  Starke is about 30 miles southwest of Jacksonville right on US 301.  Your drive should be I75 for the majority of the trip.

Bill,
What would it take to begin a discussion regarding how the winner of the perpetual trophy is chosen?

I am glad that it is going to be held. I have never been to it nor will I likely ever be, however it would be sad to see such a well known and long running control line event pass in to history.

Thanks to you ,and in fact to all of you who help keep control line alive. Not the least of which is our very own Sparky.

So, what events are going to be run. Is this going to be strictly another hohum stunt contest (sorry about that I am a racer type but enjoy the community of StuntHanger) or is there going to be racing events and combat too. Granted our numbers here in florida are small but we do like to compete.

The "King Orange Internationals" use to be one of the highlights printed/written up in the magazines back when I was just getting back into competition.  As a young man working and trying to find a decent job I had always dreamed of going to the KOI.  If I remember right it was always over the New Years Day weekend.  At that time 1400+ miles was an unthinkable drive for me at that time.  Would love to be able to say I attended one, but, we will see.  Have fun,  DOC Holliday

HI Doc,

Like I said, it has been a couple years since I could last attend, myself.  But, it hasd a certain "old time NATS" feel in that the site was huge, practice flights were NOT a roblem, and the people (both competitors and those running the event) were GREAT!
