Don't the Miami guys attend?

Also a big thank you to the tabulation team which consisted of my daughter Sunny Cambron and my grand-daughter Maggie Cambron. They came up from Winter Haven just to help out with the contest. My youngest grand-daughter, Tai Jones, also helped out.

I think there was a "Miami Guy" as one of the judges...Although (IMHO) it would of been "sumpin else" if he would of been flying. H^^

Hey, I see Tranthem's name and he is from around the Stuart area. I think it is another 100+ miles to Miami if using the turnpike. Looks like a lot of good competition.
-
I think some of the Miami area people looked at the forecast going into the weekend and decided to stay home. The forecast weather was much worse than what really happened, although it got a bit windy on Sunday afternoon. That, and the skies opened on Bob Dixon just as he was wrapping up a practice flight Sat afternoon. I bet he and his plane have still not dried out yet!
-
Yep Doc...Les McDonald was there and always a treat to talk to as was Doug Taffinder.....Steve Fitton had the best plane I
ever saw fly in wind this weekend...a Time Machine...Showed us all how it's done...it was amazing seeing that thing groove
while everything else was getting blown all over...even Derek Barry was having a time with his Dreadnaught in it. Great time
had by all though and good turnout for this great event.
-
As usual, the X-47 guys did an outstanding job. This is my 3rd KOI and I enjoy it more every year. y1 y1
Despite the somewhat gloomy weather predictions, we still got in a lot of flights in and in general had a really great time.
Can't wait till next year. #^

Congrats to Derek for your expert win!

Well, in fairness to Derek, the Expert scores are a much better indicator of who beat who than the flyoff. Derek put up a masterful wind flight in the flyoff with air gusting to 21 mph measured at five feet and God knows what at the top of the circle, as well as horrendous turbulence from the big oak tree and the buildings. It was an awesome display of skill and guts and would have won had the wind not convienently dropped to a more manageable level right around the time my wheels left the ground on my flight! I could see Derek's dad shaking his head in disbelief as he watched me get the nice air for the second flight in a row that day!
Indeed congrats go out to Eric Viglione, as he did a great job managing his nerves in his first outing in Expert and put up some very nice flying to get a 4th place his very first time out. He did another great job in the second round of managing some 2003 Nats levels of wind and still bringing his plane home in one piece. We even had to post people around the circle to tackle the plane on landing so it didn't get picked up and cartwheeled!
The X-47 crew did a fabulous job both days running the show so efficiently that everybody got in their officials before the weather got bad. We even got out of their on Sunday in enough time to be able to listen to the radio as the Cowboys gave a clinic on football excellence at the hands of the Vikes!
Also some props to some of my buddies from the club back home, Jimmy Welch came out with the win in Intermediate with his T-Rex and Artie Jessup placed 4th in his very first outing in Advanced! Great work guys!
-
I was fortunate to judge both intermediate and advanced and the plane that really got my attention was the T-Rex. In my opinion, it's a truly fine flying airplane and should really do well with the variety of large engines and motors available.
As it makes its marks, count on seeing many more in competition - like at the 2010 Fly-In.
Also, it bears an uncanny resemblance to a P-47, my favorite WW-II Warbird!

Steve is a modest man. Both flights were made in winds that would cause many Advanced and all Intermediate flyers to say "Pass". Derek's flight was indeed darned impressive, all would agree.
"Nice Air" is a bit subjective, as I didn't have a 65 foot pole for the wind meter. I doubt that anyone watching would have chosen the words "nice air" to describe it. Bottom line, Steve put in a great flight in a stiff, unpredictable wind, and looked totally at ease doing so.

I agree. Steve did a great job flying his plane; and his last flight of the day (the fly off flight) was his best of the day.
We had talked about not doing the fly off because of the very bad wind. Steve nor I wanted to see each other crash our only airplanes. I left the decision up to Steve because I would not have felt right about taking the Trophy without him or Bob Dixon getting a chance to fly for it. In the end Steve made a brave but wise decision to fly and he deserves the trophy and my huge respect for being a true competitor!
Thanks to everyone who made this great contest run smooth.
Dad and I had a great time seeing everyone and as always it is a honor to be able to hang out with Les.

Hi Bob. That doesn't answer my query. How many were actually from the 1970-80 era? Which ones, by name? I can only assume some were from the 52-69 Classic era. Just wondering if those N30 planes are starting to show up at contests. D>K
I think just Alan Buck's Twister was 1970 + era. The rest were Classic jobs. People are working on Nostalgia ships, it just takes time to get them built and trimmed! n~

Some King Orange pictures. I took less than usual since the camera had to be kept out of the rain...

I had a great time at KOI. I met a lot of fine people and some old friends. When I thought I would run out of fuel Steve Fitton came to the rescue with a gallon until I could get another can. Hope to be back next year and looking for contest to go to the rest of this year. Here is a picture of one of many nice folks.

Whose plane is this???? I think it looks great!!!
-
Congratulations, Steve. Coming out ahead of Derek is a real accomplishment, regardless of conditions.
-
Congratulations to all of you Norfolk Aeromodelers guys. It is really great to see someone you know do really well. Keep the loaner airplanes ready for me. Don't think Steve has any of these and if he does I would be to scared to fly them.

That is the plane I bought from Gary Hajek. It is a SV-22 with PA-65 and pipe. The flight on sunday was my 5th flight with it. I need to get the handle right and then get the motor run and lap times right. When I got to Starke on Thursday night it was in pieces. I soldered the tank back together and installed the complete powertrain in 3 hours. Then flew it on friday 2 times then for score on Sunday. I do best with some pressure on me. Gary builds nice planes.

thanks x47 flyers for a great contest and Steve and Gene for great pictures. Will be there next year thanks

Not to worry, Willis has an entire attic crammed with loaner ready planes!

Thanks Howard!
I will miss seeing you guys at the NATS this year. Good luck and best wishes.

Derek,
The way to not miss seeing them at the Nats is to return to Harlem?, with that WC Trophy hoisted over you head!
Kinda like Les did 3 times!

Just for laughs, here are a couple of pics I snapped Saturday using my ancient Pentax Spotmatic with some Ilford 400 speed B&W film:

In a way I have missed the old black & white photos. Seem like some details stood out better, like how handsome the guys are. LL~ LL~
-
He he he, thats why I took some B&W film to the contest. Lots of weatherbeaten faces to photograph! y1
