Title: Kindness and help getting back into the circle thanks to Neal . (updated repair
Post by: Joe Mig on October 31, 2010, 07:05:44 PM
Well after one day at my old flying field FP,after some 36 years I wanted to see if there were any others flying so I went to the other field in Queens NY at FMP and met  Neal Beekman and some others.
Neal welcomed me and introduced me to a few other guy's Frank C ,John & Phill and they were all helpfull.
Neal gave me his email and helped me along and looked at some of the old equipment I had.  That not being enough Neal emailed me saying I have a plane for your son Joe JR and all you have to do is put in that old Fox 35 you have on it.
Well that inspired me to get it fired up on the test stand and I did.  So I put it in the plane and I met Neal on Saturday and he helped my 10 year old son get some flight's under his wing and helped me get set up with other things like flight box and some lines.  I have never met people like this in other hobby's like Slot cars and R/C cars and so on.
So a Big thank you to Neal for all your kindness help  !

Neal is a super nice guy.

You will find that a lot of control line guys are here to help and pass it on.

Most of them right here on Stunt Hangar.

A very nice guy indeed.
A few pictures from that day.
I wish I had a Picture of the smile on Lil Joe's face.
Now if I could get Neil to work with me. ;D
Sorry for the poor quality pictures they were from my cell phone.

The photos look good to me.  Also I guess that is why I have stayed with this hobby/sport from day one.  There are so many great people in this willing to help. H^^

With the nice weather I went to FMP flying field with my son and as luck had it Neal was there and he did two flights with my son Joe .  This is the kind of instruction and help that the little guy needs and will keep him in the air until he is ready to solo.
 Thanks Neil

Wow I used to fly  at forest park with my dad, about 36yrs ago. Had a lot of good times there and at FMP. Did you ever see the crazy eights club contests. Very entertaining.

Not that I remember John and from what I hear about the crazy 8's I don't think I would have forgot .
However I was introduced to Richie Turrello and became friendly with him since I'm back in the circle and he is quite a guy.

With the nice day and just about no wind I thought it was a good day for some flying.
So Neal took my son under his wing for a flight with the Cosmic wind that I did a few things on and they had a great flight.
Then I flew a Yak I brought back to life, and it is the first plane I did Mono-coat on and painted and mounted a motor on.
I put an OS 20 on it with a 9-6 prop and it flew real good that I even did some wing over's and loop's with.
I think Neal thought I was good to go and take my son up so I did, big mistake.  I gave it up to soon and the plane came in on us crashing the wing in and broke it real good.   :'(
Now I really want to fix it so I think I will odor a Cosmic Wind Rib Set and try to rebuild it.
The little guy was kind of bummed but I think he will get over it.

Neal is one of the nicest guys around!

I'm not so sure I would want to live in NY, but having those guys around to fly with would make it a LOT more bearable! LL~

Neal is quite a guy and the people at FM are great as well.
The Cosmic Wind is having some reconstructive surgery on its ribs and will soon on the bench to recovery.
Good thing I picked up all the piceces.

Thanks Louie;
Well I finished the ribs and I just had to make the one the broken one was to far gone.
I think it is going to be fine but I think I will put new lead out's on it.
They work but it is close.

The rebuild is looking good.  As Windy stated in one of his rebuild articles,  "Pick up all the peices, even the little ones".   H^^

So true, I put the pieces in the trash only to return the next day to retrieve them.
From now on I take them all home with me just incase I could fix it like in this case I was thinking of building a new wing.  I just thought it would be stronger if I made up that one rib as it was in a few pieces.

Tom I told him today.
The Cosmic Wind is Coming right along with new lead outs and I got to cover the bottom of the wing.
I seem to be having some problems with wrinkles on the corner, I'll have to learn the proper way so this does not happen.

Joe, borrow or buy a heat gun, it will take those little wrinkles right out! The ones like are used for paint stripping, usually have a high and low setting, i use the low setting. Be careful and move the airstream around a bit so you don't burn a hole in the mono. It takes a little practice and i still burn a hole every now and then ,  good luck!

Hi Joe,

Is that the Brodak kit for the Cosmic Wind?  I see the spars sweep back towards the tips.  Curious!

Must be an optical illusion.  Mine has the spars parallel with the leading edge.   H^^

Well the plane was built when given to me by Neil and I do not think he built it so I do not know who the manufacture was.
Yes the spars look sweep back towards the tips like you see but are not.
Does it make a difference if swept back towards the tips or parallel to the leading edge ?
It is all done now except I have to put the engine and tank and landing gear on.
This is the third wing I covered and getting better as I learn.
Heck I did not even know what a spar was until I looked into it.

John you are correct and after measuring the spars do run parallel with the leading edge.
