The 2013 addition of the EAA AirVenture Fly-In and Convention is drawing near, and that includes the KidVenture venue. KidVenture is a large, interactive attraction that is aimed at getting kids interested in aviation. There are opportunities for kids to do all sorts of activities from learning how to buck rivets, hydraulics, electronics, weather, CAD design, and of course, flying R/C and control line model airplanes. And there is 7 days of the worlds largest air show with all the warbirds, homebuilts and antique airplanes that you can imagine.
All you have to do to be a part of the worlds largest aviation get together is contact Geri MacArthur for information. She will email you a registration letter to fill out and schedule your attendance. KidVenture C/L circle activity runs from 9AM to 3PM and is split into morning and afternoon shifts, and you can volunteer for either or both. In return for volunteering , a simple lunch is provided, and a T-shirt and hat for those who volunteer for at least two shifts. And included is a flight line wrist band for each day that you will be attending AirVenture that gets you into the daily airshow and more exhibits than you can count. For those that like to camp, a special camping area is provided free of charge with other KidVenture volunteers. For the last several years, the KidVenture sponsors have been providing a special dinner for us on Friday night, and we C/L volunteers have been getting together at he camp ground on our own on Wednesday night. In addition, to all of that, bring a model to fly, as we go to the C/L circles in the evening to fly most evenings if weather allows, and demonstration flights take place at least twice a day where we rotate on who puts up the demo, weather permitting. Accommodations are available at the University of Oshkosh which is where I stay and at other hotels and bed and breakfast locations around the area.
Contact Geri MacArthur at kvcontrolline@yahoo.com for further information. We need some more volunteers for this year. It can be some work, but is a lot of fun, and the more the merrier!
Just as a point of interest, one of the C/L managers is Melissa Olsen. Her family came walking through the KidVenture area in the early years, and the whole family have been C/L flyers ever since. Her son Eric was on the junior FAI speed team and finished second in the world championships in 2006, I believe, and both he and her daughter have been volunteers and pilots at KidVenture.
Please consider this if you are looking for a summer vacation destination! Below is the initial reminder that Geri sent out this past QApril
Type at you later,

Dear Friends:
Three months and counting down! AirVenture 2013 is almost here and the control line modelers will be celebrating 17 consecutive years of AirVenture participation. In past years we have survived record heat, tornado warnings, and monsoon rains to share the fun of flying models with children attending the annual event. In spite of blisters, sunburn, mosquito bites, lack of sleep, heat exhaustion, accidents and jet lag, our dedicated volunteers have flown a dizzying number of flights. And, over the years, the program has grown from a small informal group to almost 60 volunteers annually. And, as you can probably guess by the arrival of this letter, we are once again looking for volunteers to help us in the KidVenture Control Line area.
Attached is this year's registration form. Please look at it carefully, as this has changed a bit and it MUST be signed. The new form allows us to better plan the camping and BBQ arrangements, as well as meeting the legal requirements of EAA. This year, we (Doug and Geri MacArthur) will once again lead daily operations as co-chairmen, assisted by Melissa Olson. We can’t do it alone, however. We are well aware it will require help from everyone to continue bringing the joy of aviation to kids of all ages.
KidVenture will once again operate all seven days of the convention, though Sunday’s schedule is abbreviated. For the first six days, KidVenture will be open from 9:00 a.m-3:30 p.m.; on Sunday, however, our flying starts late and concludes at 2:00 p.m. Peak times of operation are from 11:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. All volunteers will be offered lunch during their shift; water and drinks will be available all day. If volunteering for 1 or more days, you will be offered a new shirt until supplies are gone. Additional shirts for extra days will be red T-shirts which we need to use up. This is your official uniform while on duty and it is important that you wear it so parents and children can recognize you as an official KidVenture volunteer. If you have volunteered in the past, please bring all your old KidVenture shirts (the ones without holes, castor oil, grease, Kwik logos, grass and/or ‘unknown substance’ stains) to wear as EAA has only a limited number to pass out.
We are again working hard to make this an enjoyable time for you to build friendships with other volunteers. To that end, we are hosting our 5th Annual Control-Line Volunteer BBQ on Wednesday evening of AirVenture week; plan your week’s schedule so you can participate. It is an evening of great food, fun, fellowship and hangar flying. We also have a group campsite in Camp Scholler for those volunteers who want to join us there for the long haul. This is real car camping, however, so you will need to be prepared with your own tent and sleeping bag. Once again, Geri will be whipping up delicious breakfasts and dinners for those campers who want to be pampered a bit; a ‘donation’ pot will help cover the cost of food. Just be sure to mark your registration form for both of these opportunities.
Summer just isn’t complete without a trip to Oshkosh! For information on this year’s programs, workshops, concerts, movies, etc., check the EAA AirVenture website: http://www.airventure.org. You already know how fulfilling it is to volunteer at KidVenture and we want to thank you for your past efforts. Please let us know SOON if you are interested in joining us again and complete the attached/enclosed form. Return the forms to Geri MacArthur by June 1, 2013 by either email or snail mail. Geri will be forwarding all registrations to the EAA. All passes and parking/camping permits will be mailed as soon as we have them. If you have any questions, concerns or ideas for improvements we can implement to make our area more successful, please feel free to contact Geri at 253-292-8585 or e-mail her at kvcontrolline@yahoo.com. We look forward to seeing you in Oshkosh! Doug and Geri
