These are my Great nephews. They have been around the shop quite a bit lately. When I asked if they wanted to build something they said they wanted to fix an old war hoarse that has been hanging for years. We will get it covered this week end. They were relentless on this project. My treat fellas.

Good ole Super Ringmaster. was one of my first planes. Get them on a trainer first. Hope you guys have lots of good flights with it.

How did sanding with that cast on his arm work for the older one? Looks like a classic skate-board / rollerblade injury to me, or was it something more fun - like jumping ramps with his bike.

Plane sure looks good in the bones once thay cleaned it up- good work by those lads!

Doc;

I have a Fox Steel Fin .15 on a old Clown Racer for them to break in on. Should get out this weekend after their first experience with good ols SGM Silkspan. I will post pictures of them chasing the wrinkles.

Believe it or not the cast didn't get in the way, he is left handed and his brother held the plane while he worked. Those two work well together. I gotta fess up here I redid the nose, they would have been there for weeks.

They removed the Monocote with a low level plane wit the iron set at .002. Then on to sanding till their little arms almost fell off. The big one is Jeremiah and the little one is Alex 13 and 8.

We will see what happens this weekend Mike. If they can stay focused on the covering job there will be no stopping them.This will be a real test of their attention span. I have high hopes for these two.

LL~They will learn as the rest of us did. I had no one to teach me until I joined a club years later. That is what was great about the early Sterling kits.

By the way, our conversation about getting Kyli ( almost three now) started flying,, well LInda seems to think she is to young still, but I still plan on having her at center circle with me before summer is over,, maybe Linda will be there, maybe not

One of my earliest memories of kids flying was watching Larry and Ginger's (Scarinzi) 3 yr old daughter solo with a Firebaby at Rich's Hobbytowne. Blew me away!

Boy Ward, that had to be a year or so ago. At VSC had my grandaughters in the center of the circle. I was holding them and they had the handle. I think they were 2 and 3. The 2 year old is the one that grew a little and flew for a short while. As I learned the hard way, Bite your lip/tongue or anything when they do something wrong. No matter how bad try to find something positive to say to them. Of course I loved it when the grandaughter yelled at me to set the needle right on her second attempt in Tulsa one year.

Now days its hard to get the kids interested.
My boys and there friends flew 1/2a up to the stage of some combat and after that its like no one is interested.
Have kept enough to get someone going, hoping for grandchildren soon.

The boys arrive early tomorrow to resume this build. I got a jump on the covering. 3 Coats of nitrate Clear thinned 50/50. Preped and ready to go.

I can see just what you are doing using the two boys working on that SRM, you stopped making the large models and think you can fool us thinking they are bigger than they are. LOL

That takes all the fun out of it.

It took them a few hours and more "Silkspan" than I care to mention. The hard part for them was finding the right pressure to pull it tight. Also we worked outside and the water on the Silkspan evapotrated real quick. The finished the hard side though both top and bottom.

Weekend is over they went back home but not before it was covered. Taught them both ways , tips first then one piece. Frustrating but well worth the effort.

Bill, definitely well worth it! Two youth seeing how to properly cover a model. On youtube are two kids covering a rubber band powered model with monokote, its really sad to watch.

That covering job looks great. I used to keep a spray bottle for the days the water wanted to evaprorate too fast.

Spray bottle is always there Doc. Never leave home without it.

They did a real good job with their first one. A few small errors but I will leave them there so they will know. next time will be even better. I have 3 more hanging from the rafters. They are welcome to them.

Tell Linda to cool it and you go for it. I taught both of my younger brothers to fly. The "baby" is ten years younger than I and I have eight mm home movies of Alan flying a red and black "Snapper" with a U-Reely handle at age three. Jim, 16 months younger than I, flew competition as a Jr. in 1956-57. Neither of them "got the fever" to the degree that I did but they can both still fly and keep it out of the dirt. When we are all in the same part of the world, we go to the field and fly together.
