I have done this $$ drill quite a few times against my wages then (and the then cost of an item) vs today---- and not only are a lot of things relatively cheaper, they are usually better quality, and in many areas much better selection
I was terribly ignorant in 2012 when I though I did good, winning a Sterling RingMaster S-1 kit for only $125
Dad bought McCoy 35s even knowing Fox 35 was better ( I know, arguable today) due to the price
Today, I can still find NIB of either at very good relative prices
I wounder if a Nelson, Ro-Jett, Precision Aero (PA) or any other hi zoot engine could have even sold back then
On several of my forums are some often posted ads from AHS, or other sources, for hobby stuff. Like most, I always see the $2.95 for this or $5.95 for that
I always takes me just a bit to remember that my effective wage at the Oakland Tribune for throwing 176 papers every morning was still about 58 cents per hour----Or How my first 7/11 boss paid me $1.05 to stock shelves in 1971
And I guess it would start a long discussion on military drafted in the 60s 70s enlisted pay...mine was $305 gross per month... loss of IRS and all the other mandatory contributions (Old Soldiers Home) (( Hair cut)) had me leaving the pay line with under $200 cash
Some few will not get this....but back then, I was woke up at 0430, PT, then chow, then motor pool, mess hall lunch, then motor pool, then dinner, then motor pool and released around 6 tr 8 PM ---back to my barracks to make sure it was organized and clean enough for tomorrow ----and this was 6 days a week...yes Virgina we worked every Saturday....and Sunday after Church too, if we some how pissed off the Sergeant
Typical work week was easy 84 ~90 hrs....into gross pay of $305 was about $3.5 per hr in 1972~73....
As I type this I do remember one kid in our neighbor hood we were very jealous of...His dad was a high paid TWA pilot for San Fran to Japan flights...and hardly ever home.... but the kid had EVERY new high end toy
And I did much appreciate the $5 tip from them--- every Xmas ---for delivering the Oakland Tribune and SanFran Chronical rain or shine...every day
