You can't just throw that one out there without the back story.

According to a comment printed at the bottom of a scoresheet by judge Ted Fancher, "Electric Boy" tried to start his McCoy .40 without the igniter on the glow plug.  That was the explanation given at the banquet by Bart Klapinski, sponsor of the large, elephant-statuette-topped "trophy".

PW took the public abuse in good nature.  He's a real sport in addition to being a real champion.

Ted Fancher & I were judging on Circle #1; on Thursday Paul set his airplane down on the circle, primed it, signalled the judges (Ted & I) for a start, then proceeded to flip the prop three or four times.  Paul then turned to us & said something like "sorry guys, I forgot the battery."  Ted immediately made notes at the bottom of the paper on his scoresheet & Paul became the "winner" of said trophy.

Just one of the downsides of being a senior electric flyer.
Congrats Paul.  See you in Portland.

Congrats to Dale Gleason and Gaylord Elling who both entered the WILDMAN60, and WON.

"Pachyderm Award:  Paul Walker"

Paul,
Welcome to the Legion of Pachyderms. That is the one award that was so unique that I had it on diplay for the whole year.... Then I gave it to Fancher.

I want to thank Bart Klapinski for making the original elephant trophy and also the replacement.

Lots'a folks know that the late Dick Wolsey gave me a kit he had ordered cut for the Floyd Carter "Wildman 60". It was a little tough to build for me, the kit made it easier. My plan was to have it ready to go for the following VSC, and I did have it finished for the VSC, but Dick passed away before he got to see it.

Ignition problems plagued its first VSC, and mechanical problems with the Orwick 64 occurred this year. I was really happy to place fourth, but the plane has much, much, more potential,  I knew I could do better with "King Richard's" gift.

Then it was presented the "Spirit of '46" award at the VSC banquet, and I was floored. I think Dick was, too.

It flies better than any other OTS ship I have flown, and I've flown a lot of'em.

Thanks to everyone at the VSC,
dg
