K&B .29

I got a call from my cousin yesterday, a neighbor of his (old guy) had an engine he wanted to sell or give away (not sure of which) that was described to me as a K&B .29 "greenhead," venturi / needle valve engine. It was further described as having a "three screw" back plate. I've had several K&Bs .35s and .29s, but I don't remember having one with a three screw back plate. The engine is supposed to be new, or maybe bench run. Is this an early 50s engine or even earlier?

Could be a '53 Green Head 29.  Oval exhaust?  That's what the Tim Dannels Model Engine Encyclopedia says.

Yes, three bolt backplate mentioned in the book.  And the photo shown earlier on this thread is one that I did in the last week or two.

 I have .29 and .32 just like the one in the picture for sale if anyone wants them.
   The  .29 came in green and silver head.

Norm I think this is either a 'GLO TORP' or the one that immediately followed which likely used some of the same parts.  The Glo Torps had the glow plug offset and came along to replace the older ignition versions in the post-war years.  The Glo Torps also had the oval or tear drop shaped exhaust ports.

Yes, according to Dannels, the '51 .29 has a silver head.

The Glo-Trop era, circa 1948, saw glow engines become a significant disruptor to spark dominance.  Recently, a large number of spark engines have entered the market via collections being offered for sale.  It's actually a good moment to take up classic spark, in that respect.

That's it Tony. The rear back plate is installed on three studs and held in place with lock washers and nuts. I only wish he had the box, he does have the owner's manual. He is sending it to me along with a bunch of "red tip" props, that I have never heard of.
