How long ago did K&B Fuel cease to be made and what did everyone who used it switch to for a replacement?

K&B 100 is what I always ran in my OS 35S engines.  It performed well and didn't seem to be as greasy as Fox Superfuel.

I have a couple of my 70's era OS's left and maybe a NIB will arrive soon.  I have amassed 8 or 9 new engines and I will be selecting fuel as suggested by the engine manufacturers.  I would like to find an equivalent castor based fuel for the old style engines.

I think the recommendation is mostly castor 23-25% oil, but check in with the Guru!!

I always felt that the absolutely best Fox .35 fuel was Testor 39. It had a better transition from 4 to 2. That is the fuel that I miss.

  With these old fuels that are no longer in production did any of them contain Propylene Oxide or Nitro Benzine?  I understand that Propylene Oxide is an oxidizer and was, or still is used as an igniter to help R/C engines transition from idle to full power. Is there any benefit for it's use in the type of flying that we do? As far as Nitro Benzine, what was it's advantage?  I understand it has a distinctive smell that can't be mistaken, was it used along with Nitro Methane just for a perfume effect, or alone instead of Nitro Methane.  I have read the MSDS sheet on Nitro Benzine and understand why it is no longer used but can someone still get this stuff to try when mixing your own fuel.

Nitro benzene was used primarily as a catalyst in higher (above 30%) nitro blends. Castor wouldn't mix without the NB. NB is a carcinogen so not legal anymore.

Well that's typical, a full can of K&B and not an ant in sight. This stuff has been sitting on my shelf since 1994.
I can't decide if I will give myself the pleasure of a bad engine run, or if I will flog it to some nostalgic punter who wastes the evening on Ebay dreaming about flying instead of being in the shop. It may just look better on the shelf in their basement. . .

Hi Dick,

Sig makes all castor fuel which is the easiest for me to find.  The 25% all castor is what I have been using in the "old" engines.  I have found it in 5%, 10% and 15% nitro.  Also, Powermaster GMA blend is great for the old engines.  If the engine is new, or not run much, I add an ounce or two of Klottz (I get it from Sig, too) to help keep them clean.  I don't do it to engines that have a lot of time on them using castor only since it will sometimes remove all the varnish and the compression is totally lost.  The Klottz adding is an idea I got from Marvin Denny.

   How do you obtain the Sig fuel?  Are you having it shipped to you or finding a hobby shop that carrys the castor/nitro blends you need?  And also, it you have it shipped, do you know it Sig will mix the shipment......say two gallons of 5% nitro and two gallons of 10% nitro in one case?  It is time for me to find fuel to feed my Fox .35's and Torpedo greenheads this flying season.  Thanks for any advice you can pass along........TDurrill

Damian, your K&B fuel seems to be K&B 100+. The plus signified their synthetic (X2C) blend, if I remember correctly.

Thanks George. Just wondering what the percentage of oil is and if I need to add some more oil to use it for C/L. This is why it's been sitting on the shelf as I didn't want to run it through an engine and have it overheat in flight.

I, fortunately, have a hobby shop that carries Sig products, and will order same.  it's about an hour away, but I have been going there since 1963! LOL!!  My son, and I have ordered 2 cases at a time, in the past , so it makes ordering fuel worth while for the hobby shop.

It has literally been years since I actually ordered fuel directly from a manufacturer.
