KA-10 Finished
« on: June 22, 2025, 03:16:48 PM »
I have finished a KA-10 and just in time for the NATS! I started building this plane in September 2023 and completed it over 4 different periods in which I was visiting America. It was built primarily from the Tom Dixon plans. However, I found a schematic of the plane from Russia and made some small modifications to match its measurements.

The plane has a sheeted wing and is covered with silkspan. The paint is Mr. Color lacquer plastic model paint, thinned 50/50 with Mr. Color Self-Leveling Thinner and shot through an Iwata Eclipse airbrush. The clear is automotive clear. It has a Super Tigre .60 for power and a 6-ounce Sullivan plastic tank. It weighs 58 ounces.

Looks SUPER Jake!   Hope it checks out well.  I have the Dixon plans.   I'd be interested in knowing the changes.

Very nicely done.
Never heard of Mr Color paint.

Gotta ask, what the number 25 on the wing tip?

Nice job. Very fittring paint scheme .

After dithering for years , I figured , for the same weight , the Dixon Versions a good deal less work .
though if you were marooned on a desert island , doing it to the real plan , would help pass the time .

Theres an awful lot of bits in there , here .

Hope it flys as good as it looks .  H^^

Outerzone has a version of the plan:
"This particular plan was derived and redone from plans originally drawn by Tom Dixon with data obtained by Rolan Suruge of France."

WOW!!! That looks fantastic. You have brought your building/fininshing/flying skills to a very high level in a very short time. Congratulations, good luck at NATS and future Worlds with Singapore.

Thanks all for the kind comments!
To answer some questions:

The "25" on the wing is the year finished. That and the grey are nods to Bob Gieseke, who did so on a lot of his Bears.

The changes (I can remember) from the Tom Dixon plans were:
> Increased the stab/elevator size to 20% of the wing (I believe I added half an inch to each dimension)
> Moved canopy back slightly
> Fixed the rudder shape
> Slightly less taper to the fuselage side
> Changed the cowl shape. The plan has a smooth, SV-style cowl while the actual KA-10s had a more complex shape. However I did not completely replicate the real KA-10's 3-cutout intake.
> Per Kolesnikov's instruction, shortened the nose half an inch (his homebuilt engines were very light)

And yes, I'll be at the NATS, flying this thing in Advanced. I can't wait!
