Without having to scrounge around all the hardware stores, a simple substitute is ordinary cornstarch, or baking soda--applied dry.  I have also used cornstarch slightly dampened, to creep into the cracks and crevices.  Once dry, an old toothbrush is used to clean up.

I can still get K2R and my local, small town grocery store.   When I asked a couple of years ago the store told me they could order it at any time.  I bought a can a few months ago.

I just googled it.  It's available at Ace, Walmart, ebay, Amazon and others in the spray variety.

Is this the substance that is sometimes able to pull fuel stains out of balsa and other surfaces?

I'd add to Dr. Spark's comment that mixing it with isopropyl or ethyl (rubbing) alcohol helps penetration. Mix almost as thick as toothpaste... brush on (kid's water color brushes do well and cost a lot less than your prime doping brushes.) Evaporates, but the alcohol might provide some penetration.

Also, it can be messy to clean out completely, particularly if alcohol raised a gooey mess.

The price is right, tho.

No one must use the search feature here! This has been covered more times than carter's has little liver pills! Save your money that you use to buy chemicals and get out your Monokote heat gun and boil the oil out. I didn't invent this, I learned about it here on the forums. K2R is SSSSSLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWW and messy. Mixing up your home brew slurry isn't much better. Just heat the area with your monokote heat gun, watch the oil come to the surface, then wipe it off with a paper towel. Work steady, keep the gun moving. You won't scorch the wood if you are careful at all.  When the oil is completely out of the wood, it just stops oozing, then move along to the next section. I learned this when I needed to recover my Primary Force ARF.  After a bazillion flights , all the China coat was falling off or delaminating. The right side wheel pant weighed about 20 times more than the left side from the oil soaking and that was affecting flight. The whole left side of the model was oil soaked from nose to tail. I checked into everyone's favorite method, and I forget who suggested it, but I tried everything just as a test, and  heat wins hands down. I got the wheel pant within a few grams of the right one, and took a significant amount of weight off the model. When I thought I was finished, I went back over the whole thing one more time just to check, them mopped on some lacquer thinner. This pulled the grail a bit, then block sanded everything. I brushed on a coat of SIG Stix-It around the nose, wing leading edge, wing roots at the fuselage, and anywhere else I thought might be a problem. I had NO problem putting on fresh orange monokote. I put the engine and such back on, and it was my old friend again! This was several years ago, and I have no ides what time frame to look for in previous threads, but it has come up several times before. There are no new problems, just new people have the same old ones! The answers are all here some where!

A heat gun might work OK.  I shudder to think about doing it!  While getting hot air into the inner reaches of a tank compartment, I envision major scorching of wood closer up to the heat gun.  So..... I would try it on a flat surface, but not inside a cowl.

Be careful with the current version of K2R.  Many years back they changed the formulation to include acetone.  I discovered that the hard way cleaning my T-Bird.  There were posts about this on Stuka Stunt Works.  Look up the SDS (formerly the MSDS) for K2R.

I use cornstarch mixed in alcohol and brush it on.  After it dries and pulls out some of the oil I vacuum off the cornstarch.  If necessary, I use Windex after vacuuming to clean off the cornstarch residue and repeat the application if needed.

Hi Boot, I too have had trouble finding K2-R so over the past 3.5 years I've bought 2+ cases from Amazon! You see I've had a fine relationship with a Brodak Smoothie ARF for about 9 years ending around 2008 when the China Coat covering wouldn't stay on even with CA! So about 3+ years ago I pulled the plane out of my attic as stripped all the outside wing and tail coverings off! Boy was that thing soaked! This past spring after many many treatments I started to get serious about refinishing it! Last Wednesday I flew it for the first time and boy was I happy! I reinstalled the original LA .46 only this time I mounted a tongue muffler on it. I flies even better than it did before! For those of you familiar with the NVCL Stunt Fests' this is the plane which a Reed Tail Hawk attacked while I was flying an Official PA Expert Pattern! Since I was once a real adept Combat Flier(UC) I intended to go after the bird and bring it down!

Well fortunately for me the guys on the ground yelled something about a $500.00 fine for hitting wild life and so I broke off my maneuvers! However the bird didn't! So I went totally on the defensive! My bird still lives and so I hope does the NVCL Hawk!

I use K2R when I have it or cornstarch denatured alcohol otherwise. After the slurry dries to powder I hit it with my heat gun and it sucks even more oil out.
Think S.M.A.L.L. y'all and, it's all good, CL, FF and RC!
