Title: JUNKYARD WARS - Revision 1
Post by: Robert Zambelli on February 10, 2010, 02:52:30 PM
After doing some serious thinking, I've decided to add a little flair to the event.   #^ #^ #^

TAKEOFF!!!!!! You have the option of installing a landing gear. If your plane successfully takes off from the ground, you will get bonus points (I will decide on how many points). You may use any type of gear that you desire.
I will move the event to the circle near the lean-t0. Circle #1 as I recall. That will allow takeoff attempts from the paved strip.

Now, you know well in advance - PREPARE!!   LL~ y1 LL~ y1

Also, please tell everyone you know, especially your fellow clubmembers who may decide to enter.

Very clever idea! You probably should make a ruling now on pre-made dollies / pre-made gear.

John sure picked the right guy to run this event!  H^^

Good point, Larry.

The gear must be bent ON SITE.
It must remain attached to the aircraft.

Paul asked "and fashion the wheel from the scrap wood?"

All hardware is at the builder's discretion.
In other words, you bring your own engine, tank, wheels, controls, wire, bolts, nuts, glue, etc.

Just remember that every bit of wood that you use MUST COME FROM THE PILE.

Not to be creating prolems but.....

You know some nut like me might prefab an airplane from aluminum litho plate or something and then only need a wooden spar from the pile.

Airframe must be all wood( from pile)???

No problems at all - you just won't be able to enter it. Prefab - ABSOLUTELY NOT - read the rules. The only thing you can do before the fact is attach leadouts to the bellcrank.

Airframe must be wood - simple enough.  WOOD. The pile is where I decide to put it  ;) ;) and everyone has a fair chance. Plenty of top grain wood   LL~ LL~ to go around.

NO METAL FLYING SURFACES.   n1 n1

Fair for one, fair for all.

A good place for Trexler wheels. They weigh next to nothing, and you could use like 3&1/2" wheels. Just look out for sand burs. LOL

Jim, good idea if you can find the.
Something to keep in mind, however - most of the JYW planes come out tail heavy. Some heavy wheels placed far forward will probably help.

And, get this - bonus points for LANDING without flipping over.

Does a "lawn dart" landing count? No flipping over...

Bob I think the reason they stopped using landing gear was the planes were to heavy to take off on the grass When our team the wobbly wheels flew we had to have landing gear. We were the only team to take off and we used a cardboard ramp. Should have won but Windy flew the last flight so that made us come out fifth. LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~

Ok Bob,

Prepare to get whipped.  ~>  I told you if you changed one thing what would happen.  You replied the only changes you would make would be to address "Safety" issues.

I now have a partner and am planning on entering the JYW but am thoroughly miffed at this change in the procedure.

Sincerely,

Your not very happy friend,

John

The reason I did this is to give the contestants the chance to be more creative.
The landing /takeoff gear IS NOT A REQUIREMENT. Just an option - a chance for more points.
Properly done and with enough power, the plane might just take off on its own.  ~^ ~^
The contestants are turning out better planes every year.
Five years ago, if I had predicted the kind of flight that Joe Gilbert did last year, nobody would have believed me.   LL~
The field is level - my new option gives the same opportunity to everyone - take advantage of it.  y1 y1
