JunkYard Wars Brodak
« on: March 31, 2017, 09:19:22 AM »
Where can I find a complete list of official rules? Nothing on the Brodak site for this event ruleswise. I tried to email Ken Armish who's is running the event but it bounced back undelivered. Thx.

You're right.  The JYW rules seem to have fallen through the crack this year.

I will contact the CD.  Maybe he can patch it.  Here's the basics:

Build a plane from scrap corn crates furnished by Brodak.  Powered by a .25 or less.  Bring your own tools.  Limited building time, 30 minutes I think.

Typically six teams enter and 3 or 4 planes fly, generally one or two fly pretty well.

Mike - a few years back, I changed the rules to allow the Fox 35 as the only 35 allowed.

I don't know if Ken changed it back to the 25 limit.

Granted, somebody could find a 25 twice as powerful as the usual LA.  But it's a quick building event.  Using the Tim Allen approach is likely to result in comical results just like on "Home Improvements".  Bring it !!!

I like the episode where he put a big model airplane engine on the drywall sander.

Hello All
Our team 3 Old Farts and an Angel have competed in this event.... Here are the rules, Brodak supplies the wood ( orange grates ) , you have thirty minutes to build a plane... You are allowed to have your motor mounted to hard wood mounts ( please do this for safety ) ..... Motor can be  fox 35 or anything 25 or smaller....... oh bring tools, hardware and ( LOTS OF GLUE!!! LOL ) ...... as for the flying part, you have to complete 10 level laps first, then you can do as many stunts as possible for extra APPLAUSE!!!! ( and bragging rights )...... Even though this is a competitive event, it is MUCH MORE ABOUT GOOD OLD FASHION FUN!!!!!!!!

The year I was there it was a blast watching Danny and the kids perform.   Especially when he started doing maneuvers.   I don't think I wrote down any scores as we were too busy laughing and applauding.

I was wondering:  There are rules???  I did not think there were, except no knives or firearms .  If there are: Is it not getting a little to involved & formal?  If there are rules, should not this topic be moved to the Rules Discussion Forum???   ???

Of course there are rules. That's why I asked the question, so I would not show up completely ignorant of what is legal and what is not. I need a hard answer, a list of the published rules for the event. Which no one seems to have. Dennis provided me a good email for the event director, whom I will contact and get the straight poop. I tried to do that in the first place but the emails were bouncing back. Hence the reason for my post. Thanks for the replies.

When they publish rules some guys always start looking for loopholes and ways to get around them.

The unwritten rule is have every thing you need except the wood.  Brodak provides that.  Then the best rule is:  HAVE FUN. #^ #^ #^

There was no safety thong the year Danny and the kids wowed the crowd.   Guess they will have to relinquish their award. LL~ LL~

Actually, the lack of rules encourages cheating.  Last year, the rules changed half way through the event and later, yet again.  We just need to know the rules up front so we can work accordingly.  Believe me, there is nothing enjoyable about watching the rules change after the event has started.

So, enough back and forth.  What are the rules?

This thread is a year old so I don't know why it was revived because it pertains to 2017.  However Tim Stagg said in a post last Feb.  i will be there......seems I have been talked into hosting the Junkyard wars......changes are coming...should be fun to watch, Tim.   He also said,  Mike i need to run a few ideas by Will and Mark. In my opinion this event needs new ideas...it was very hard to keep folks interested in doing and or watching this event in its current configuration last year. It is a great event but it has become a "little been there done that" My ideas are more centered around the flying portions i.e. balloon bust competition etc. Something that would be fun to do and fun to watch, Tim.      I do not recall any rules changing during the event.  So I think Tim will chime in with the rules for 2018 when he has them set.

Guys,

i have been asked to host the event this year and I apologize to all but I have been travelling a lot recently for work and have not checked the forums in a while.

OK here is the plan, which I still have not confirmed with either CD...I still need to contact them.

The only changes I have in mind to the rules are in the flying portion of the event. NOTHING ON THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MODEL BUILDING, POWER REQUIREMENTS, ETC. These will remain the same.

My only potential change would be to add a little more excitement in the viewer experience.... such as a balloon bust...fun event type etc. I personally think the event needs this, since the beginning of the event it seems all the airplanes are similar vin design, most fly about he same and the main difference that determines the winner is the showmanship score....well lest make it interesting and give the crowd a fun show....yes there may be carnage but what a fun thing to watch.

At this point this is just an idea and if everyone who enters wants to fly the same old thing...who am I do disrupt the event.... I just think it would be fun and a whole lot more fun for me to MC the event and the crowd to watch and cheer on the contestants  #^ #^ #^

A "fun fly" event? Discussing and planning ways to get around the rules sounds a lot like competition.  And competition to win at any cost--    In order to assure just a "fun fly", there should be no prizes, no awards;  just a "go-no go" score by completing the required laps without crashing.  The only recognition might be photos in the post-contest report.
