JUNKYARD WARS!!!!!!
« on: January 30, 2010, 07:48:01 AM »
Hopefully we will have the usual great turnout in this most entertaining event.
As most of you know, Joe Gilbert and his associates really raised the bar in 2009 and some real effort will be required to top it.  y1 y1 y1

The gauntlet has been thrown down.  ~^ ~^

From what I've seen in running the event for the last 8 years, here's a suggestion: FORGET THE SMALL ENGINES. I have seen many attempts  HB~> HB~> with only minimally successful result - most won't even fly
Go for the biggest that we allow - a .25.  In fact, find the most powerful 25 that you can - the FP seems to be the engine of choice.
No matter how much wing you have, no matter how straight you build, no matter what controls you use, these aerodynamic masterpieces (   LL~ LL~ LL~ ) need one thing more than any other. POWER. You can't have too much.
Also, I would avoid the flying wing concept - although I have seen a few limp around the circle, most are just wasted effort.

Note that I'm making these suggestions to help more people enjoy JYW.
See you all at the Fly-In!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bob Z.

I've seen the Junkyard Wars at The Brodak on four occasions.

To date, the rules have never been published on the Brodak site of in the contest flyer.  It would be nice to know what the limitations are if some new people want enter.  There must be some rules vis a vis the engine size, lines, and the degree of prefabrication of the engine/mount/tank module.

As Mr Beard says, the main rule is to have fun.

But, here are a few that I will enforce.

Engine size - .25 max
Prefab engine module - ABSOLUTELY NOT. All wood is from the pile.
You may use a bellcrank with the leadouts in place. Pushrod made on site.
Lines - .015 min, length 70 foot max.
Pull test - YES. 25 pounds max, less for smaller engine, at my discretion..
Fuel, prop, tank, handle - all free.
Electric starters - pilot's choice.
Spinner nut - highly recommended.
Although I've never had to do this, I reserve the right to inspect all planes before launch and disqualify if I feel that it would be a hazard in the air.

Bob,
I thought you were allowed to bring an engine crutch. I certainly never saw any maple motor mounts in the "pile", yet everyone I remember seemed to have maple motor mounts of some kind.

We used the 1/2 by 1/2 wood corners of the hand picked contest grade wood supplied.

I have to say, I would've never believed it unless I witnessed it. Joe flew that plane remarkably and I was laughing the whole time. The look on the other particpants faces was great . Joe flying on the ground was better yet. If only I had devised a slightly better tank attachment, I feel I would've done much better. I still qualified for the finals which I think was great nonetheless. I still felt the profile is certainly a worthy opponent. I certainly did enjoy the event and my son did as well. By the time most of the flying took place there wasn't much decent light left for photography, but  here are a few grainy shots of the action. Notice how one ship only seemed to fly level using full down elevator. The red one flew first and was able to catch the last rays of sunshine at the top of a wingover.

If you change even ONE thing about the JYW, I will personally Kick Your A**.  Joe and Mike have set the bar so high that I don't see anyone even coming close in the foreseeable future.  LL~ See you in June.

John - I'll be so busy running that you won't be able to catch me!!!
Seriously, if any changes are made, it would only be in the interest of safety.

Regarding setting the bar high - you're right on that call!!!

BUT, it will just make everyone else work even harder.

I just hope that they listen to me regarding engines.

Hey Bob,
Team Rootbeard has been running the old Fox .25 and it just does not have the POWER. Seem like Mike and Joe have it dialed in with the LA .25. Lots of HP !

Maybe I will get the old Fox bored out to a 454, and add 3 duce carbs. Varoooom! LL~

I am with you Bob, Safety first! We will run a .25

Paul - see if you can find an FP 25. That is, in my opinion, your best bet on power.
They're normally pretty cheap at swap meets.

What kind of tools do we bring?

Chain saw and nail gun?

Are we competing for first in air?
longest flight?
Best crash?

Looks like fun!

Guys and gals,

I would love to enter if I had a partner here in OKC to work with  ??? .  As far as engine is concerned these would be my choices in order.

1.  Brodak .25   Available, light weight, lots of power.

2.  LA .25  Available, lots of power, a bit on the heavy side.

3.  FP .25  Lots of power but not real easy to find a good one.

All of the above have the power Bob is talking about and would give the Wrecking Crew a run for their money. This all assumes you can come up with a design that is capable and even come close to the presentation "Mr. Enthusiastic"  AKA  Joe Gilbert brings to the circle.   ~> .

David - you can bring and use any tools you want.

I have a scoring system that awards point for time to completion, flight capability and maneuvers.

Upon completion of your plane, you have to entertain the crown - NO, I won't tell you what you have to do. Only that it will be sure to embarass you!!!!!

I've been watching this for five years now.

They're getting to where building the plane and getting it to fly is no longer in doubt.  The better planes can do quite a few stunts.

The next obvious step is to tie streamers on the best two and put the WAR in Junkyard Wars.

Bob,

Regarding the "rules":  You mentioned you can bring and use any tools you want.  But what are the rules regarding prefab?  Motor crutch Assembly?  Bell crank and leadouts?  I've seen the past two years competition so realize the construction is all done at the field and out of the crates but just didn't really pay attention to what was used for MM or if the control system was pre-assembled.

Help me out here.  I getting the bug reaaaalllly bad.
