Too hot to do any flying!
« on: August 05, 2007, 07:59:33 PM »
It is 10:00pm Sunday night and the heat index is still 91*!  Air temp is 88*.

It has just been too hot to go flying! (I did get the clear shot on the plane, though)

The last time out for me it was 98 degrees with high humidity.  Put, up about 6 flights before I called it quits.  Would that explain why I went thru a Route-44 Cherry-Lime Ade and a large lemon ade before I got to the stock car races.  Was taking turns with John Bender and  Howard Terrell.  Have fun,  DOC Holliday

I have a mean cardiologist who won't let me go out and play if the heat index is 90, or higher, or the chill factor is 40, or below.  The wintertime restrictions aren't much of a problem here, so I still have 7-8 months that I can get out and have fun.  It's not too bad; a lot better than the other alternative.       Glen

According to NOAA the current heat index here in Aggieland is 98.4 with an air temp of 91. Our monthly club meeting is tonight at our flying field, and I'm PLANNING on going out early to fly a little. I managed to go out Saturday morning when it was only about 85, heat index ~93 but it was 94 air temp at noon when I left the field. I didn't even want to know the heat index, and I was one soggy pilot.

Glen is right though, it's not too bad in the fall and winter. BTW, we're planning a fly-in for November 17, R/C & C/L. Y'all come!

When the temp cleared 90, I had to quit flying for the summer. I'm taking too many drugs that make me heat sensitive. When the temps go below 90 again, in the fall, i'll be back.

You guys should live in CA.  Only 102 (107 on the index) on Sat. in Woodland on my 9th flight.  On Sun. it was 73 in Santa Clara (my other flying site) and today it barely got up to 66 in San Francisco and the Bay Area.  Guess that makes the average temp 80.3333333333333333333333 degrees.  Just takes different clothes depending on what part of the day and how far you drive or walk! n~

It was about 95 and 90% humidity Sunday when we went out to Fentriss.  Just before 3 PM the skies erupted in thunderstorms and we scrambled from the field and regrouped at the local Hardees for a late lunch and bull session.  Everybody got three or so flights in, so the afternoon was not a total loss.

Brother Joey, you are sooooo right about our youth.  We would be out when it was 100* and not think a thing about it.  40 plus years later, add a heat stroke previously along with "old age" medications and diabetes, and I just cannot do that sort of thing.........

Well,  we have set a record of sorts for the longest streak of days officially over 100.  It just ain't supposed to be that hot here!  At 4:30pm, Thursday, the air temp was still 104.  The heat index was 96 at 11:00pm!  In the sun, the temp was between 115-120 at times this week.  At my "age" (actually more the abuse my body suffered), I cannot be out there too much when it is like that. ;D

EDIT: the heat index is already 105...... :(

And to think that in the late '50's, we were in grammar through HS school in Memphis this time of year, no A/C. Just big windows in the class rooms. I remember 100 degree days. In the early '60's , late August, we were in summer football practice. Talk about HOT. But then we were kids. Now, I like my cool work shop.

Hi Jim,

We had no problems back then because we had no A/C.  It has really spoiled us!  In football now, we have to spend the first 6 days (by State Law)  in "acclimatization" of the kids.  No full contact drills!

Hey Bill,
I think I read somewhere that some research group could account for an increase in body fat of 20-40% in today's kids (6-15), due to living in an A/C environment. Go to the local shopping mall today and you could believe this!

When it is 100F in Kansas, we just put on a light jacket and fly anyway. After it warms up we unzip the jacket. During the hot part of the year we don't even use a glo plug battery.

I guess we all are getting old.  John Bender called yesterday about flying at noon.  The temp gauge in the Ford said it was 91 on the way to the field.  94 by the time I got there.  The Cotton Candy handled the heat like the champian plane it is.  But, the OS FP40 did not like it that much.  Changed plugs second flight.  Then prop on the third flight.  Finally on fourth flight got the best flight of the day.  John had ARF Flite Streak with fairly new Brodak 25 doing full patterns and expeirmenting with props.  Had to call it quits so he could go to work.  On way home stopped at boys shop to spray some weeds and temp said it was 101.  Got home took shower and headed for stock car races and it was 104.  At the track I was leaking all over the place.  Anyway on the way home from the races it was down to 85.  Now I know why I don't like doctors,  they would probably keep me locked in.  As I tell people I know, "When I quit sweating start worrying".  Have fun,  DOC Holliday

When I was a young kid we didn't have air conditioning at home.  No A/C at school or at church.  Many of the downtown stores had A/C but not all of them.  Us kids spent most of the summer outside day and night.  Hide and seek is more fun at night anyhow.  A lot of the day was spent with chores and odd jobs.  My parents didn't get A/C till some time after I moved out.  We knew it was hot but without any handy comparison we didn't know how hot.  We'd play till nearly dehydrated then get a drink from the water hose and play some more.  Mom froze ice in metal ice trays but that was saved for meals and occasional treats. After I was grown I worked outside much of the time.  I used to think a gentle breeze on a 108 degree afternoon just felt good.  I've spoiled myself so much lately (can't possibly be age I'm only 45) that I really have trouble getting up the motivation to get out in the heat.   I find that if I get on out there about daylight I can hang with it a lot better than if I wait until mid morning when the sun is beginning to come into its strength.  With the good rainfall we've had this year (first august in several years without a burn ban), the mosquitoes kick in about the time the heat starts to wane making the evenings somewhat unpleasant. At least we usually get a good cool down by mid September and thats not far away. I went into a feed store one mid-90 degree day in September and the loading hands were talking about how thankful they were that it had cooled down.  This summer has been cooler than normal but humidity and mosquitoes have taken some of the joy out of cooler temps.  Still, I realize its not hot here; its hot in Phoenix.

Somebody misplaced summer here. It's been cloudy, a bit of wind and lucky if it hits 70 in the late afternoon. Periodic showers and occasional high wind. Feels like Fall. Steve Helmick said the Puget Sound has two seasons: Winter and August. I think August is on vacation.

Randy...this Global Cooling is going to be a big political topic, you just wait! I've thought about getting air conditioning, but forget why. I thought about fixing my fence, too, but haven't yet. It blew down in November.

But anyway, this is the first time I've heard of this "heat index" thing. I understand wind chill, and I've suffered the heat of Alabama (103 F. and 99+% humidity) and the heat of Edwards AFB, CA (117F max, 115F+ for two weeks). So, what's the heat index deal? Wind or humidity related, or both?   LL~ Steve
