Joe Nall Questions
« on: April 25, 2018, 07:16:22 AM »
I'm really excited about my first Joe Nall but I do have a ton of questions.  I keep hearing things about shuttle buses and renting golf carts.  I  know the place is huge, I'm feeling a little bit intimidated.  I really don't want to be wandering around the first day with the deer in the headlights look, carrying my plane, wondering where I'm supposed to go.

Can someone please give me an idea of the layout of the place?  Are the control line circles mixed in with the RC stuff or are they off in a separate location?  Will I be able to park my car anywhere near the CL circles or do I have to lug my stuff a long distance (hopefully not).  I hope I don't have to load my plane and gear on a shuttle bus to get to the CL circles.

I got a hotel, so lodging isn't an issue, but what about restrooms, eating, and stuff like that?  Should I bring my own chair to sit on during the day or are there places to sit?  Is there any shade or is it totally out in the open?

I've been told that there are battery charging stations, but are they anywhere near the CL area?  I will need to do some battery charging during the day since my ship is electron powered.

What time does flying start in the mornings?  What time does it end in the evenings?  I've heard sun up til sun down, just checking.

Looking forward to meeting some of you guys there, thanks for the info.

Vince

Hi Vince,

I guess if anyone can answer your questions, it might be me. First, Triple Tree is very large but the CL area has its own parking, right at the circles. There are shuttle buses (free) and golf carts (not free) but you should not need either. At the CL area, we have electricity and many of us keep our chargers plugged in, so no problem there.

We have two clean port-a-potties right at our area. They are serviced daily. There are several food concessions but none exactly where we are located. Everyone seems to find a way to drive up to the main line and grab lunch. This is our 7th year and hunger has never been an issue.

When you arrive, you check in at the Registration cabin and they can direct you to the circles. You can probably see them even though they are probably 1/2 mile away. We are directly across the full scale runway from the Electric Fight Line. We are between the main flight line with all the vendors and buildings and the giant scale 3D flight line which is at the very end of the property. We have signs along the internal road directing folks to our area. We also have a large tent and a permanent building.

IF you need anything else, please feel free to call me. Mark Weiss, CD 302-547-4917

Thanks Shug, I guess I did a terrible job of searching, I should have found that information.  My bad.  Much appreciated.  The map was very helpful.  I also went on Google Maps to take a look, the place is huge as described.

Mark, many thanks.  Looks as if you answered all my questions.  I just sent you a PM.  I should be arriving some time Wednesday evening and I'll be at the stunt clinic on Thursday.  I'm so glad that we can park by the CL circles, I  was dreading having to schlep all my stuff all the way across the tundra.  Also glad to hear that there are battery charging stations within close proximity.

I can't wait to see this place, I've been hearing about it from my RC buddies for quite a few years.   One of my good friends is a very accomplished RC scale builder, I'm hoping to look him up when I'm down there.  You think we put a lot of detail into our planes, you should see some of his stuff.  He built a B-24 Liberator that looked like it just rolled off the assembly line at Willow Run.

Anyway, safe travels everyone, see you there.

Vince

Vincent,

Glad you are making Joe Nall. You will enjoy the event.

The one question about flight times

Flying is  24 /7 , If you are camping , be prepared for a all night light show of electric models with lights , We end the day  sitting under the big tent watching the lightshow .

The 3D guys put on a great show with the bright lights and smoke

see you there

Yep, but you forgot noise.

That’s my only gripe about the event. I like to sleep at night, and the 3D guys like to fly their gas powered behemoths most of the night, keeping me awake. I find it hard to be on my game after being awake until the wee hours.

Vince, since you’re staying in a hotel, you won’t have that problem.
I have seen the light, and it’s powered by a lipo.

Sleep, who needs sleep when you are at Joe Nall, We did enjoy the 3D models at night more than the daytime, The light they put on them really light up the sky, not just the model. The smoke really helps with the lighting .

. I think there is a gas engine Time To stop, but who knows , we were down there watching them around midnight ,,,

Jim was camping a lot closer to the 3D guys than I was and there was a big group of trees to help block the sound from my site ,

Hi Will, Jim.  Funny you should mention that, because when I'm not flying C/L, I'm flying..................wait for it..........3D!

I love C/L, but I also love the ability to do all kinds of crazy stuff with my RC planes.  I hate to mention it on here because it always gets everyone all spooled up.  IMHO, there's nothing wrong with loving both, they are similar but completely different.  I belong to a RC club that is nice enough to let me drag my CL planes out into the  middle our 1000 ft. runway and fly them.  Most of the time, we do it early, before the regulars show up, but there have been days when they take turns with us.  Yes, there are a couple of us who fly both RC and CL  Nice deal, since when we're flying, no one can fly their RC planes.  Great guys.

See you at the Nall, I'm sure I'll be hanging by the 3D flight line when my batteries are charging.   So I'm guessing we can fly C/L until dusk without any problems, that's great.  I need lots of practice, we've had such crappy weather here in the NE this spring.

Oh, I also have RC boats and RC cars, but please keep that between us.

No camping for me, that ship has sailed.

Take care.

They have boats at Joe Nall too, they run them all day at the main dam, so if you have room, bring them too, The 3D line is a short walk from the control line circles ,or better yet, just go to the tower and you have the Best view in town.

As to flying dusk to dawn, last year after a few dares, you cannot do it , bet I can , etc, I flew a well used model the the full pattern Around 10 pm , pitch dark, no moon , kinda scary to think about it,

. We had a weak attempt at lighting the circle with a car , a hippie van and a spotlight, but most agreed it only blinded us like looking into the sun,,

One youngster tried  duct taping a flashlight on his wing , we still don't know what happened,  we picked up pieces for two days ,

See you in a couple weeks, plan on fun and fellowship at " Fun Central "

Once again I will be there and for those who can't make it I intend on making a full movie this year instead of the short videos I shot last year. I have a Osmo this year for some 4K footage. I will try again to captue the night time light show. Last year I was not rested when I did the night shots and it's pretty hard to do. I will post a link when its finished uploading. See everyone in a few weeks.

For quick and simple lights for night flying, use cyalume light sticks. They have them in colors now so you can put green on the right wing and red on the left. For C/L flying, put one on the ground for reference down wind, and one on the fuselage of the model, and then go fly. At the SIG contest, combat flyers would just tie them to the ten foot string in place of a streamer and have at it. Bill Calkins would fly some awesome carrier tricks with a carrier model. When flying sailplanes back in the day, we would put one on each wing tip and one on the high start. You would see these three green lights streak up in the sky, then one drop away while the other two orbited above! With either discipline, it's best to do it in total darkness with no back ground light, it just confuses you.
  Type at you later,

I see a ton of RC related vendors on the vendor's listings, does anyone know if any of our CL vendors are going to be there?
