Title: Joe Nall is cancelled
Post by: RknRusty on May 14, 2018, 10:56:26 AM
UNPRECEDENTED RAIN FORECAST FORCES CANCELLATION OF LAST DAYS OF JOE NALL
After more than three decades of spectacular weather during the world-famous Joe Nall RC event, the forecast for the remainder of the week has forced the board to make the decision to cancel the event and have everyone off the beautiful Triple Tree grounds not later than noon, Tuesday, May 15.

I sure hate being the one to make it official to the Stunthangar crowd, but Sparky just called and asked me to do it.

Here's the explanation from the Triple Tree website:

Sorry to disappoint,
Rusty

Tough to relax, I lost $500 on a rental car and lodging that was non refundable.

Won't make that mistake again.

Ouch! I'm sure you are not the only one. I feel bad for everyone that mother nature screwed over.

Oh, I'm sure that there were a lot of folks who lost hotel money.  No biggie, I'm a glass half full kind of guy.  I could have rented the car, driven for 11 hours to get down there and then sat in my hotel room for three days watching the rain, only to have to turn around and drive 11 hours to get back home.  Plus, tomorrow, which is when I was planning on leaving, is supposed to just be nasty, nasty weather, which means my drive down there would have been in all that rain and nastiness.  I just hope that all the folks who had to pack up and leave Triple Tree get home safely.

It's all good, there's always next year.

My lesson learned is don't pay in advance for a guaranteed, non refundable hotel room just to save money on your rate.  I booked it thru Travelocity.  They called the hotel manager yesterday and pleaded my case to no avail.  Apparently guaranteed, non refundable means exactly that.

I have been to Triple Tree many times - I've flown in in my own aircraft, driven in to watch various events and have probably seen every bit of this incredible place.
As you may know, many people arrive in high-end motor homes (Like Prevost) or pulling large trailers.
If there was a deluge as predicted, many of these vehicles would be mired in. If just one got stuck and blocked the exit road, the rest following would not be able to leave.
When a large motor home gets stuck, it's a monumental task to extract it - you don't accomplish it with Farmer Brown's tractor!
As disappointed as I am in the turn of events, I feel that they did the right thing.

My neighbor, a long time vendor at Joe Nall, lost $5,800 on the tent that he rented.
So, let's hope for the best fir coming events.

Charles - what's happening in September?

Bob, I think that must be Dixon's thing in Georgia. There's some confusing email info going around and nobody seems too sure. I wouldn't recommend packing Ol' Yeller yet.

This is not Tom Dixon's event, they are going to do Fall Nall Sep 24-30.

Now you know why I don't make reservations for hotels ahead of time now.   Was lucky in that the motel I had reserved for Brodak's one year was notified ahead of time and the credit card company backed me up.  I believe the room was taken before I got my refund. D>K

I'm so disappointed Joe Nall was cancelled, but I know it was for the best. Kathleen and I were looking forward to being there today and tomorrow to see so many of our friends and take in the sights. Is there another Joe Nall event of some sort in late September?
      Thanks,
                Doug

I got burned a few times in the past saving on NO refund reservations...carped about it and got told to always buy the low cost Trip insurance...did it once...do not remember company...but they covered sudden sickness and local or distant end Ma Nature events...I think cost me under a Hundred but paid out $750...to pay off non refundable airline, hotel room...rent car was canceled no cost ----in my case MC accident so I could not travel
 Just a thought

Had a rain delay myself, sitting out a deluge at Banks Lake, Electric City, WA, on Thursday afternoon. Called my friend Gary Gingerich (Safford, AZ), who had planned to drive to Phoenix, get in the big silver silo and fly to Atlanta, rent a car, motel, etc., for the Joe Nall. He didn't know that the last few days were cancelled, because he was at home, having blown out his knee and barely able to walk 5' without crutches. He said he still has to fly someplace, didn't get his airfare refunded, but is happy, considering. He has a "smart phone" but isn't really online, which I don't understand at all.

Fishing was great! My OFB kicked my tail Tuesday afternoon after we got to Banks Lk., but I returned the favor on both Wednesday and Thursday, with more meaningful (i.e., bigger) fish, both Smallmouth and Largemouth Bass (around 3 and 4 lbs, respectively). Crappy weather continued today (Friday) with wind and rain. We'd planned to stop by Potholes Res. on the way home, but it was nasty, so we came on home, just a few hours early, tired, battered, but the bleeding had stopped. Yeah, a lot like going to a model airplane contest. Feel like I've been beat up, but much happier for having gone. If you're ever through Electric City, stop at the "Fusion Cafe" and get the Lamb/Beef Gyro...YUM! y1 Steve

Aw, Steve, you flung a cravin' on me, I love a good Gyro. And fried fish in a soft taco too. With lettuce, lemon, and tartar sauce to lubricate it.
