Here is a link to the control line section of the Joe Nall website. I hope that we get even more people showing up this year. If you do plan on attending please contact Bob Hunt, Mark Weiss, or myself to discuss what days you would like to attend. We would like to have people show up at different times during the week to help with training flights and demos. Mark did an excellent job last year but he was really run down by the end of the week. A couple hundred training flights will do that to you.

April 20, 2013

The 2013 Joe Nall is only three weeks away! I wanted to update all of you on the final details about all the activities that will be taking place at Joe Nall's Newest Flight Line, the Control Line Circles.

Special this year is our wish to get as many younger attendees at the Nall to fly a C/L plane at the circles. As a matter of fact, all pilots under the age of 16 will be given a special nameplate signifying the fact that person successfully flew a C/L model at the Joe Nall. These all metal and painted nameplates will become collector items.
We are striving to get every modeler what attends this year's Nall to fly a C/L plane and get their own memento. Of course, we are bringing all the C/L planes anyone could ever wish to fly. Matter of fact, we have all the materials to rebuild as many as necessary!

Boy, do we have a World Class team of C/L pilots to fly and help you fully enjoy the C/L experience. Not only do we have a former Stunt World Champion, a former team member of the US Stunt Team for World competition, several members of the very prestigious PAMPA Hall of Fame, but we are also expecting some of the very best RC aerobatic pilots flying C/L with names that include Hyde and Kristensen. And some of RCer's best young guns will drop by again to improve their skills with our C/L stunt planes. It just doesn't get any better than this!

Back by popular demand are our special "I Flew C/L at the Joe Nall" Tee and Golf shirts. These are not available anywhere else and they sold out last year before the week was over. Get one and a piece of history: C/Lv.2..our second year at the Nall. The artist again this year is Tony Albence, a very gifted modeler who is also responsible for the incredible "Warbirds Over Delaware" shirts and accessories.

Regardless of your age, if you bring your own control line plane with you, please come down to the circles and fly it on the wonderful circles that Pat and his crew have created. Pat and all of us would appreciate mufflers on your glow engined airplanes. If you need some help or have not flown in a while, we have a whole team and experienced pilots and instructors on site. We are also bringing all the field support equipment anyone could ever want or need to keep your planes in the air. You will find it very easy to identify our team of helpers: each member will be wearing a unique and very bright safety green cap with the "Triple Tree Aerodrome" logo on the front. Trust me, you cannot miss these hats!

If you did not bring a plane but would like to experience the joy and fun of flying a control line plane, c'mon down for we have brought more than one dozen trimmed and flight tested C/L planes for you to fly. We will not only supply the plane for you to fly, but an instructor as well. We have three levels of planes, from the new beginner all the way to the experienced stunt flier. How can you get set up with a plane and an instructor? You got it....just look for anyone wearing a really bright safety green cap!

If you are just curious and would like to learn more about the original "fly by wire," come by and say hello. If you want more details, just look for one of the folks with those special caps! We will be having demonstration flights all week, both at the circles and during some of the noon shows on the main flight lines.

The green capped team would appreciate your understanding in terms of the hours we will be available for training. We will be prepared to begin each day at 9:00AM with a one hour lunch break to coincide with the noon time demonstrations. Training will open again at 1:30PM and continue until 5:00PM.

For those who do not need any assistance flying their own C/L planes, the middle circle, Circle #2 will be available all week for open flying. We will have a sign up list for both Circles 1 and 2. If no one is waiting and you just completed a flight, fuel up (or change your batteries) again and enjoy yourself.

So, c'mon down and have some real fun. Experience the roots of controlled model airplane flying without servos, 2.4 transmissions, receivers, and everything else that makes RC not quite as simple and enjoyable as C/L flying.

Sunday at Joe Nall,

the wether was great, 70 + degrees, light wind , directional all day , very few clouds, but not too hot , occasional wind changes an a couple minor south carolina wind gust, I could tell you how many kids got their control line badge for flying control line challenge, seemed like hundreds, probably about 75, we have alot of good flights with some top level rc pilots , spouses and kids, they all seemed excited about getting their pins , and they plan to come back for more flights during he week,

Alot of local and long distant flyers were there, Joe Adamusko, Bob Hunt, Craig Gunder, Watt Moore, David Smith, Sarah Davis, Howard Shenton, Ken Armish, Tom Hampshire, Dale Barry and lot more , too many to list, three circles on well manicured putting green level grass circles, small 1 1/2 diameter wheels had no problem taking off, ,

! We had alot of trainer flights, Stunt Flights, carrier demonstrations and I even got in on a ww2 .Combat match,
nothing but fun today

1969 NATS Senior Stunt Champion Mike Stott is at Joe Nall, his first time. He is representing SIG in the TIME FLIES HOBBIES (a SIG dealer) vendor tent out on the main RC flight line. Look for the SIG models out there and you will probably find Mike. I told him to get over to the C/L circles to see if he can still fly a stunt pattern.

The weather today was perfect. A little cool in the morning, but it warmed up nicely. I got my first flight on an electric plane(one of Bob Hunt's trainers)and it was very eye opening, constant speed and line tension everywhere, it was fun. I helped out with the beginners for a while before going up to help some of Mr. Shaw's friends get in a few flights. Allen Brickhaus and Charlie Reeves got in this afternoon and all of us will be pulling out Mr. Shaw's big planes tomorrow, except for the Sweeper, that one's all yours Derek. Oh yeah, Tom Morris got in today also, with a fleet of Cavalier profiles, must be6 or7 of them . According to the weather channel the conditions are going to keep getting better and warmer. See you when you get here.

Joe Nall Tuesday,

America weather as all week, a littler warmer, almost no wind, perfect for flying, 80 plus degrees, sunny , not a cloud in the sky,

Tom Morris, Bob Hunt, Allen Brickhaus and Charlie Reeves , Dale Barry, Tom Hampshire , Don Jenking, Joe Adamusko, Wayne Robinson, Craig Gunder , Ken Armish and alot of others Put in many flights, three circles going all day, Bob Hunt had Full Scale Aerobatic Pilot Matt Chapman fly his advanced trainer , really picked up quick, for first time control line flyer, alot of first time flyers , alot of kids, spouses and retreads,

Control line flying at Joe Nall is taken the promotion of Control Line to a new level, Most people that flew today have not flown at all, or have not seen a control line model in 30 plus years, Lot of big smiles from the older flyers, reliving the days of flying combat. Racing, and stunt, alot of people I trained did not even know we still existed,

The Stevens Aero Ring Rat electric trainer has proven to be very durable , the one minute timer is about perfect for trainer flights, we have 4 Ringrats and have been able to keep the two front line models in service,

Even had a couple R/C Scale flyers show up today with new Ringrats , they flew the trainer last year, and came back this year with their own ringrats and flew with us,

Alot of kids are very proud of their youth challenge control line buttons, they get a button/ badge when they successfully Fly the trainer and they usually bring back their friends to get their own badges

I posted a picture of Bob Hunt and his Stunt trainer , I flew the same model first thing tuesday morning, I felt like it gave up nothing in most of the maneuvers, if flew well , tracked well, and had a very nice groove to it, 38 ounces , around 500 inches and a e flite 15 package foam wing with some carbon vail on leading / trailing edge and foam fuselage with balsa sheeting on fuselage , in the right hands it could be very competitive in any profile competition,

Don Jenkins is in the photo with Joe Adamusko, to show how well the circles are manicured. small wheels on Don's Gieske Nobler with wheel pants, no problem ,

Matt Chapman is in the orange shirt, very nice guy,

With the control line people that we have been working with all week , we are real fortunate to have the Venue of the worlds largest RC Event to show off what we do , most of the guys at the control line circles are dedicated to promoting the hobby, and feel the fly inn is a good place to start

I think I read in SN one year there was over 1500 trainer flights given during Oshkosh! That's awesome and only helps tp further our little section of model aviation. Keep up the good work. We all benefit from it.

I want to drive over to Triple Tree this coming Saturday, the 18th.
Whether or not I take a control line plane, I can register as a pilot. I then pay the $20 standard pilot fee and can park near the circles and sign up to fly on one of the fields.
Or I take no plane, I pay a spectator fee($10, I think), and walk from parking to the circles and sign up to fly one of the supplied planes.
My wife or whomever is tagging along pays a spectator fee in either case.

Does that sound like I've got it right? I'd prefer to take one of my Baby Streaks with a muffled Norvel on it. No un-muffled Tee Dees allowed, I presume?

Like it's in a groove. I love the way you precision stunters do that. I can fly wild and fun disconnected stunts with my 1/2A planes, but whenever I can finally get the Shoestring to draw fuel right, I am going to start learning to put it together this Summer. I was in the shop this afternoon relocating the tank, hopefully it'll run now. I have an old Sterling Yak-9 kit on the table too, to be unboxed soon. I've got an old Fox .35 for it. The bigger planes are a new adventure for me.

IF you can make it down on Friday it would be better. The things start to slow down on Saturday (not that this is a problem) but most people will be leaving or gone by then. I hope you have a good time when you get here regardless of the day. This is a great place to fly!!!!!!

I'd really like to meet some of you guys. If it doesn't work out this time, I'll plan better for next year. Though I've been burning circles since I was 12, I've never been to a fly-in of any sort before.

These must have been taken after the pattern was over. Bob and I flew the noon demo today at the same time (trying to pull off two synchronized patterns (and it worked out pretty good thanks to Bob)) but he flies electric and his plane cut off before mine. I was trying to do things to keep the crowd entertained until my plane shut off.

And like the showboat he is, while i was not looking, he did his overhead eights laying on his back. This guy....

But really, it was a great time and the crowd loved it. I am happy that we were able to fly together, I think it made the show.

After we were done I went back to the CL circles and Bob let me fly his electric Genesis....

Ummm, Larry, I wasn't referring to kids - most of whom are never seen again - but rather the effect on adult RC flyers, many who remember when they "used to do that".

This is probably a bigger draw than trying to recruit children, most of which are interested only in "those remote control jobs".

It's a nice thing that you, Dan and others are doing with the 'Kidventure' thing and KOTRC give-aways, but let's be honest: how many of those kids ever follow-up, once they've seen "remote conrol"?

Hi Uncle Mikey!
The philosophy at KidVenture is to just plant the seed and see what grows for both model aviation and general aviation . We have had kids/families come back in following years to say they enjoyed it and are at least dabling in the hobby. One of the Chair Persons is Melissa Olsen, and her whole family took to the hobby after they walked through KidVenture one year, and now they help run the thing. Her son Eric took up speed and was on a Junior FAI team and did pretty well. Her daughter Kelcie is in the military in some sort of aviation field and is a very good sport flier/instructor. We have it set up with Art Johnson to email a file with the plans to the Tuff-Baby and a few other models to anyone who asks for it. One thing we learned over the years is that a BIG factor that hold some people back is just buying any kind of supplies. No old fashioned hobby shop to run to to but what is needed for a typical trainer. That is why Bob Arata and I decide when we were brainstorming the Tuff-Baby that we were going to use as much common or hardware/HomeDepot materials as possible to construct the airplane, and I think we were successflu. In a Tuff-Baby the only hobby related items to buy is the engine and bell crank. All you can do is put it out there to them and ecourage them to ask questions. We don't restrict a training flight to kids and I would guess about 30% of our weekly total are adults, the Moms andn Dads. I try to talk to the parents as much as possible. I am of the belief that this is our target. If we get the parents interested and involved, the kids will follow. Mom and dad have the bank account and the car! It will be interesting to see what the follow up is as time goes by at the Joe Nall event where I think it's been said they flew 400 training flights last year during the week. It is something new to them now, maybe a flash in the pan, but time will tell. We have been averageing 1500 to 2000 for the week at KidVenture, and the numbers should be proportional. The main thing is to expose as many people as possible and be as approachable as possible while they are there. At any rate, I'm planning on Oshkosh this year and for as long as I can make it. There is nothing like being around airplane people, no mater what size airplanes that they happen to prefer!

This should be a separate thread, but I don't know how to transfer it. Anyway, one sad thing is that it is now CHEAPER to get into R/C than control-line! With the fully equipped ARFs from the discount sources well under $100, even a 1/2A CL model can't compete on a cost basis. What are we to do?

Any form of awareness that we can get to the general public will help our hobby grow. we have a large number of aviation buffs, r/c flyers and alot of family members looking for something to do come by our circles at joe Nall,I really enjoy the stories of how we did it 40 years ago from the old timers, who bring the kids and grand kids out to fly control line for there first time.

Just keep it up and we will see control line prosper from our efforts , either at kid venture, joe Nall or just taking your neighbors kids flying, it will not all be a wasted effort,

I remember reading somewhere that the great Jim Walker was almost giving away the A-J Aircraft firebaby ARF. He stated he made up the losses with the bigger planes and the other kits.

Joe Nall Thursday

very busy for most of the day , great weather. a little overcast gave us a much needed break from the sun , very little wind, Alot of flights on all three circles,

Ivan Kristensen, TOC and Nats flyer for RC visited us and really put on a show with the Stevens Aero Ring Rat, After the break he came back and put in a couple flights with the pathfinder, with a little practice he could compete well in the advanced class, a unbelievable feat for someone that has little recent control line experience. Derek barry put on another demo flight at the Noon Halftime show , in between some of the best flyers in the world he represented our event with a very good pattern on his latest stunter Cutlas

Here's a few more pictures I found today of Derek giving the noontime demo. Also had to include the picture of the GoPro mounted on the fuselage to a guys Sbach.

Some of those RC planes are real works of art! I've recognized a few I've seen when I was in the warehouse at Chief Aircraft, like the Krill Yak 55 with the high zoot paint scheme on it.

Definitely got this place on my bucket list. Maybe I can work something out with my RC friends on campus and all caravan out together.

And once again, here's the link to Thursdays pictures. They get posted every night and its a couple hundred at a time. Really worth looking through and some really beautiful aircraft!

I flew right after these two guys. It was one hell of an act to follow but the crowd seemed to like CL as much as anything else. Maybe because they have seen a ton of RC but a lot of them have never seen CL. Even if they have seen CL most of them have never seen a real stunt pattern. After cleaning my plane I exited the flight line and the crowd gave me another round of applause and a lot of them stopped me to tell my how much they liked my demo. It was really a great feeling to be welcome by so many RC guys.

Thanks to Allen Brickhaus for announcing during my flights!!!! He does an excellent job of keeping the crowd entertained as I fly.
